  • Pregnancy + Exercise: What does the research say?
    Feb 2 2026

Roni sits down with Dr. Margie Davenport, a world-leading expert in exercise during pregnancy and postpartum.

Dr. Davenport holds a PhD in Integrative Physiology and is the Christenson Professor in Active Healthy Living at the University of Alberta, where she leads the Program for Pregnancy and Postpartum Health. Her research has directly shaped national and international exercise guidelines for pregnancy, including evidence-based intensity and heart-rate recommendations now used worldwide.

She has chaired multiple Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines, contributed to International Olympic Committee consensus statements on pregnancy and sport, and has published over 200 scientific papers focused on closing the gender data gap in exercise science.

In this episode, Margie discusses the historical exclusion of pregnant women from research, the importance of physical activity in preventing complications like gestational diabetes, and debunks myths surrounding exercise during pregnancy. The discussion also covers the safety of supine exercises, the benefits of strength training, and the need for more research in this area. Personal anecdotes from both Roni and Margie illustrate the practical implications of these insights.
