Welcome to Read Along Radio, the podcast that turns reading struggles into reading success with exciting and thrilling stories.

In the last episode, we learned how Mary got Robin to look for the owner of Poppy, the Pekingese at the pound who is scheduled for euthanasia. Because Robin thinks the dog in the cage next to Poppy told him Poppy’s owner is dead, Robin wants to prove this—not just to convince Mary to stop trying to find Poppy’s owner, but also to convince himself that the dog really did talk to him. Robin’s uncle Damian told him that he must be special if dogs talk to him like he thinks, and Robin wants to be special.

In this episode, we’ll join Robin as he tries to help Mary while still trying to find proof that Poppy’s owner has died.

Here is a rescue story about a dog whose owner died. Roger heard his neighbor’s dog, Harper, barking incessantly one morning. Since this was unusual behavior for the dog, Roger went next door to see if his neighbor was home. He could hear the television, but no one answered the door. He called the authorities to request a welfare check. They found Roger’s neighbor unconscious on the floor. He was transported to the hospital where they learned he’d had a heart attack. Sadly, he didn’t survive.

When no one came for the dog, Roger again called the authorities to inform them of the situation. His neighbor had no close relatives, and Roger was told that the animal control officer would be sent over to pick up Harper. It would be kept at the pound for a week, and then probably be put to sleep. Roger asked if he could take Harper to his house instead. If someone came to claim it, Roger would give it up; otherwise, he would keep it. As you can probably guess, Roger wound up keeping the dog, and they are still living happily together.

POPPY starts out in a similar manner. Poppy’s doting owner is dead, but the person who was supposed to take care of her dumped her in the street on his way out of town. She ended up behind bars at the local pound. Next stop, euthanasia. The needle. Death. Robin Kould and Mary Yen race against time to find Poppy an owner before it’s too late, but Robin winds up in imminent danger. How can they save Poppy when Robin himself is in need of a rescue?"

In chapters 1 and 2 of POPPY, the second in the Robin Kould and Mary Yen Rescue Series by T Heights, listeners will hear how Mary gets Robin to look for the owner of Poppy, the Pekingese in the cage next to a dog Robin thinks has talked to him. Because he believes what the dog has told him, Robin thinks Poppy’s owner is dead. He decides to prove this—not just to convince Mary to stop trying to find Poppy’s owner, but also to convince himself that the dog next to Poppy really did talk to him. Robin’s uncle Damian told him that he must be special if dogs talk to him like he thinks, and Robin really, really wants to be special—at anything, to anybody, for whatever reason.

Listen as Caitlin Williams, the same awesome voice actress who read BOMBO, puts you in the midst of Robin and Mary’s race against time to save Poppy.

    Dec 16 2025

Welcome to Episode 11 of Read Along Radio—the last podcast of 2025.

“Read Along Radio” will not be podcasting the week of Christmas or New Year’s.

    Have a Merry Christmas:

For those of you who are thinking about rescuing a dog (or any other animal) from your local shelter to give as a gift, make sure to include the person(s) you are gifting in the decision. “Live surprises” are often not a good idea. If after careful consideration of all the ramifications (where it is going to stay, who is going to feed and water, clean up after, train, etc.), everyone is in agreement on rescuing one, pick it out together. I know. All this cautionary advice from a dog rescue advocate, but there are too many awful stories about dog rescues as gifts that are just too sad to relate at this festive time.

Here are some other ideas to help dog rescue, instead.

    • Donate money to a shelter in someone’s name instead of buying them a gift.
    • When hosting a party, ask for gently used dog beds, kennels, dishes, toys, etc. in lieu of gifts for you to donate to your local shelter (check with the shelter first to see what they need).
    • Give some of your time to volunteer at your local shelter with the person.
    • AND, of course, purchase some Robin Kould and Mary Yen Rescue books by T Heights where the profits from the sale will go to dog rescue. See THeightsBooks.com

    And a Happy New Year:

    • Put "Walk A Dog" at your local shelter on your New Year’s Resolution List. It’s an enjoyable way to exercise, and will benefit the dog and shelter as well.
    • Help at (or hold your own) fundraiser event to benefit animal rescue.
    • Collect gently used dog beds, kennels, dishes, toys, etc. in lieu of gifts to donate to your local shelter (check with the shelter first to see what they need).

AND, of course, purchase some Robin Kould and Mary Yen Rescue books by T Heights where the profits from the sale go to dog rescue.

“Read Along Radio” will start podcasting again next year in January with the narration of POPPY.

In the meantime, T Heights will be at the “Meet the Author” event hosted by Dragon Tale Books from 11 am until 2 pm on December 20th in Menomonie Wisconsin.

Dragon Tales Books is a small, independent bookstore owned and run by Ann Vogel. She is generously contributing a share of her profits from the Robin Kould and Mary Yen Rescue book sales to go along with all of the T Heights profits to the Wisconsin Bound Dog Rescue group.

The Wisconsin Bound Dog Rescue (WBDR) rescues dogs from abusive and potentially deadly environments and finds good forever homes for them in Wisconsin. They have hundreds of rescue stories, and they shared these two with me.

Welcome to Episode 9 of Read Along Radio.

We finished BOMBO in episode 8 of “Read Along Radio”. At the end of that episode, we asked for feedback on BOMBO and “Read Along Radio”. Here are some of the comments we got about BOMBO.

We had several people ask, “What happens next?” What happens next is the Read Along Radio podcast of POPPY.

Poppy is the sad, but cute, little Pekingese we heard about at the end of BOMBO. She had been doted on by her owner who died suddenly and left Poppy in her grandson’s care. The grandson dumped her in the street on his way out of town. She is now behind bars at the county pound, and scheduled for euthanasia. The needle. Death. Robin and Mary race against time to save her.

The same wonderful narrator, Caitlin Williams, will be reading POPPY. Here is an excerpt from the book.

Read Along Radio will begin broadcasting POPPY in January, BUT before that …

By the way, the fourth book in the Robin Kould and Mary Yen Rescue Series, LOKI, will be making its debut at the Book Signing/Book Fair in Wausau on December 13. Make sure to purchase your hot-off-the-press copy of LOKI from Barnes & Noble and use the voucher number 1, 2, 9, 2, 2, 9, 6, 9 at check-out.

In LOKI, Robin and Mary call on their eighth-grade classmates for help in finding homes for more than a hundred dogs rescued from a puppy mill. Just as their mission is gaining momentum, the school principal confiscates the money they’ve collected for dog food, and all the dogs are going to be put down the next day. With Loki and the other dogs facing death, Robin questions his usefulness in canine rescue work. But then who will be the voice for those who cannot speak?

LOKI has the themes of compassion, determination and cooperation are interwoven into another humorous Robin Kould and Mary Yen Rescue.

Tune in next week for more dog rescue stories, comments on BOMBO and “Read Along Radio”, and the “Meet and Greet T Heights” at the Dragon Tales Books in Menomonie, Wisconsin on December 20 from 11

  • BOMBO Episode 8
    Nov 18 2025

Welcome to Read Along Radio, the podcast that turns reading struggles into reading success with exciting and thrilling stories.

In case this is the first time you’re tuning in to Read Along Radio, or just as a review, in the previous episodes, we met Robin Kould as he started his first day at a new school in a new life. He encountered two kids spray-painting a dog and tried to stop them, but ended up getting blamed for their crime. Robin wound up being assigned 100 hours of community service work at the local pound, getting a three-day suspension from school, and was required to tour the local jail. We got a glimpse of Robin’s special gift of being able to communicate with dogs. We also accompanied him as he toured the local jail as part of his court-assigned “disposition”. An incident with an inmate cut his tour short, but Robin experienced enough to know he never wants to be put there.

On Robin’s second try at a first day of school, he met Mary Yen, an eighth-grade classmate who wants to be a lawyer. He didn’t like her, but she is the only one in his class who talks to him. Robin has explained the incident that got him in trouble to his Uncle Damian and decided he wants to prove his innocence and clear his record. During his first attempt to do this, he learned how easy it was to jump to a wrong conclusion and embarrassed himself by accusing the wrong person. He finally managed to track down the real culprits. After hearing their story and learning that Bombo will be euthanized if Greg Peterson doesn’t get out of jail in time to claim his dog, Robin switches his focus to proving Greg’s innocence.

Robin and Mary exhaust all of their ideas for getting Greg Peterson out of jail in time to save Bombo. They haven’t found a way to get the dog adopted—even temporarily. Robin talked Judy, the manager of the pound, into letting him take Bombo for a last walk. Things got pretty exciting when Bombo pulled him all over town. Robin ended up having to call Mary for help because he couldn’t make Bombo return to the shelter. Mary explained how she got Judge Fairchild to send the police to help Robin, and we learned who really robbed the liquor store.

In this episode, we get a wrap-up of what happened after the thief was caught, and Mary takes the credit for being the hero.
