President Donald Trump’s administration is defending Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick against bipartisan calls for the Cabinet secretary to resign due to his ties to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

The latest trove of Epstein files released by the Justice Department showed that Lutnick planned to visit Epstein’s island in the U.S. Virgin Islands in December 2012 after claiming that he and his wife cut ties with the disgraced financier in 2005. Uncovered emails show that Lutnick kept in touch with Epstein after his 2008 conviction in Florida.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) will not support any funding for the Department of Homeland Security without a deal on the conduct of federal officials, a new line in the sand for congressional Democrats that increases the likelihood of a partial government shutdown later this month.

House Oversight Chairman James Comer (R-KY) announced the first congressional hearing into the Minnesota fraud scandal and invited Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN) and state Attorney General Keith Ellison to participate at a later date.

The first hearing, scheduled for Jan. 7, will include testimony from state Reps. Kristin Robbins, Walter Hudson, and Marion Rarick, all of whom are Republicans. Comer has invited Walz and Ellison to testify on Feb. 10.
