  • Aztec Astrology and the Spirit of America: What the USA's Tonalamatl Reveals
    Jul 3 2025

Welcome to the second season premiere of the Offerings of Copal podcast, hosted by Cihua Mazatl, broadcasting from Kumeyaay land in present-day San Diego. In this enlightening episode, we delve into the concept of the Tonalamatl, a sacred calendrical system reading developed by the Nahuatl peoples, exploring how it maps out the day-to-day energetic forces that influence individuals, ideas, and entities, including the United States of America.

Join the exploration of how the U.S.'s birth under a "Nine Ocelotl" sign influences its national spirit, the country's inherent gifts and liabilities, and the transformative potential lying ahead. Through this decolonial lens, Cihua examines historical parallels and the ways in which America’s energetic blueprint could help it shift from a destructive force to a guide.

This episode challenges conventional narratives, offering a perspective that combines ancient wisdom with a call for accountability and transformation. Discover how the blending of ancestral insights and modern understanding may unlock pathways towards renewal, healing, and a more equitable coexistence. Tune in for a thought-provoking discussion that spans history, identity, and hope for reimagining the future under the guardianship of the Ocelotl's wisdom.

🔍 Note: I also explored the Alfonso Caso Tonalamatl count, which places the U.S. birth on 9 Acatl in the Coatl trecena. While it offers interesting insight especially around speech, law, and duality. I ultimately chose to work with the Mesa/Amoxtli count that places the birth on 9 Ocelotl in the Miquiztli trecena.

Based on the spirit, history, and consequences of this nation’s actions, the Jaguar born from Death felt more aligned than the Reed born from Snake.

I offer this not to discredit either count, but to show the interpretive process and remind us that even calendars carry politics, cosmology, and continuity.
