Savarnas don’t know caste—the same way a fish does not know water. When you breathe, see, feel, and thrive within a system, it is difficult to notice it, let alone know it. How does a fish then know water? By starting to know itself, of course.

When Rohan chooses this way to learn about caste, he ends up learning a lot about himself. As Rohan and his friends open up about their experiences of caste, caste moves beyond titles and reservations and starts becoming like water—shape-shifting, yet ever-present.

शहरों, महानगरों में रहते हुए जब हम काम या पढ़ने-लिखने की जगहों, दोस्तों की महफिलों में ये कहते हैं कि, ‘यहां जाति कहां हैं? हम तो किसी तरह का भेद-भाव नहीं करते.’ उस वक्त हम यह भूल जाते हैं कि यहां तक पहुंचने में कौन-कौन मेरे साथ चल रहा था? उनमें किस-किस जाति के लोग शामिल थे? क्या ऐसा था कि स्कूल से लेकर दफ्तर तक मुझे हर जगह अपने जैसे विशेषाधिकार प्राप्त जाति के लोग ही मिले? तो, निम्न जाति के लोग कहां हैं? उस वक्त ज़रूरत बस निगाह उठाकर अपने आसपास देखने की होती है. आपने कभी ये करके देखा है? मुम्बई, महाराष्ट्र के रहने वाले रोहन के लिए भी अपने सरनेम पर गौरव महसूस करना और आरक्षण का विरोध कर रिज़र्व श्रेणी की जातियों को अपनी परेशानी का कारण बताना बहुत आसान था. लेकिन, एक फेलोशिप पर काम करने के दौरान जब रोहन ने निगाह उठाकर अपने आसपास देखने की कोशिश की तब उसे जाति और उससे जुड़े विशेषाधिकारों के बारे में पता चला. इस प्रक्रिया में रोहन ने जाति के बारे में जितना जाना उतना ही बचपन से भर दी गई बनी-बनाई धारणाओं के पहाड़ को तोड़ने में उसे मदद मिली.

इस पॉडकास्ट के ज़रिए रोहन और अलग-अलग राज्यों से आने वाले उसके दोस्त जाति के अपने अनुभवों, उसका सामना, उससे प्राप्त सुविधाओं और पहचान के बारे में अपनी बात रख रहे हैं.

When Muskan said “Hamare yahaan yeh sab chalta hi nahi hai” (These things aren’t allowed in our areas), we couldn’t help but notice that she said it for feeling love as well as anger. Shubhangani who had joined the zoom call from Kekri, Rajasthan chimed in by saying that she feels pushed around, like a football, by elders. If there is no space to express and feel either love or anger, then what does the heart do? Listen to these adolescent voices as they tell us exactly as their heart feels.
