The recorder is not merely a tool of documentation, but rather a creative instrument that demands we rethink, re-listen, and reflect on our listening patterns. In asking who the recorder is placed in front of, what it catches that we miss, and what we weave together that it cannot pick up, our team at The Third Eye deepens its obsession with the recording of knowledge.


Our ‘Audio Documentaries’ are sound-and-narrative explorations voiced from the field. These nonfiction narratives are held in a feminist recitation that moves through the personal, the collective and the political. With a story of a father revisiting his life, or one of a single woman in Kekri, Rajasthan, or then with the feelings of people home alone during the Covid-19 pandemic, these insightful, empathetic and creative portraits of realities of the ground both hold their own, and contribute to the mainstream discourse.

    My workplace is a prison. My client is the prisoner. Who am I? There are many kinds of social workers, but the kind that works in prisons is often asked, "Why would anyone work for prisoners?" "Is my son doing okay? Ask him to come meet me next week." "Madam, there is no vacancy in the shelter home, especially for a mentally disabled woman. Now what to do?" A social worker spends her days going in and out of prisons, shelter homes, and courts answering these and many more questions. As the person who mediates between the criminal justice system and a woman 'caught' by the system, answering these questions, and making the system legible is a part of her work. But what questions does she carry with her? How does she manage to see the human behind the crime? What goes on inside the head of someone who is at the heart of the criminal justice system?Over the last 10 months, we have been conducting writing workshops with 5 social workers from Prayas, a field action project which does social work intervention in the Criminal Justice System. It is housed in the Centre for Criminology and Justice in Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS). This podcast features the letters that emerged from the prompt : "If you could write a letter to anyone, who would you write to and what is it that you want to tell them?"Letters are narrated, written, and edited by Aruna Nimse, Komal Abhishek Tawde, Surekha Sale, Kalpana Katare, and Krupa Shah.     Savarnas don’t know caste—the same way a fish does not know water. When you breathe, see, feel, and thrive within a system, it is difficult to notice it, let alone know it. How does a fish then know water? By starting to know itself, of course.


    When Rohan chooses this way to learn about caste, he ends up learning a lot about himself. As Rohan and his friends open up about their experiences of caste, caste moves beyond titles and reservations and starts becoming like water—shape-shifting, yet ever-present.


    Listen to Rohan in this education edition episode as he looks for caste in his own memories and, in the process, pulls out reflective voices and experiences. Rohan has participated in the EduLog programme with The Third Eye for its Education Edition.


    The EduLog mentored 12 writers and image-makers from India, Nepal and Bangladesh to remember—in the present continuous—their experience of education from a feminist lens.

    शहरों, महानगरों में रहते हुए जब हम काम या पढ़ने-लिखने की जगहों, दोस्तों की महफिलों में ये कहते हैं कि, ‘यहां जाति कहां हैं? हम तो किसी तरह का भेद-भाव नहीं करते.’ उस वक्त हम यह भूल जाते हैं कि यहां तक पहुंचने में कौन-कौन मेरे साथ चल रहा था? उनमें किस-किस जाति के लोग शामिल थे? क्या ऐसा था कि स्कूल से लेकर दफ्तर तक मुझे हर जगह अपने जैसे विशेषाधिकार प्राप्त जाति के लोग ही मिले? तो, निम्न जाति के लोग कहां हैं? उस वक्त ज़रूरत बस निगाह उठाकर अपने आसपास देखने की होती है. आपने कभी ये करके देखा है? मुम्बई, महाराष्ट्र के रहने वाले रोहन के लिए भी अपने सरनेम पर गौरव महसूस करना और आरक्षण का विरोध कर रिज़र्व श्रेणी की जातियों को अपनी परेशानी का कारण बताना बहुत आसान था. लेकिन, एक फेलोशिप पर काम करने के दौरान जब रोहन ने निगाह उठाकर अपने आसपास देखने की कोशिश की तब उसे जाति और उससे जुड़े विशेषाधिकारों के बारे में पता चला. इस प्रक्रिया में रोहन ने जाति के बारे में जितना जाना उतना ही बचपन से भर दी गई बनी-बनाई धारणाओं के पहाड़ को तोड़ने में उसे मदद मिली.


    इस पॉडकास्ट के ज़रिए रोहन और अलग-अलग राज्यों से आने वाले उसके दोस्त जाति के अपने अनुभवों, उसका सामना, उससे प्राप्त सुविधाओं और पहचान के बारे में अपनी बात रख रहे हैं.

    As the outside slowly opens up to life after the deadly second wave of the pandemic, the inside is still grappling with absence, loss, death, fear and loneliness. In this episode, we meet people who navigated, and continue to navigate these feelings on their own. In ‘Living On Your Own In The Pandemic', five folx from rural and urban speak to The Third Eye about their experiences of solitude and confinement; what one learns, how one copes, what one laughs about, who do they call, who rang the bell? As we enter another unending phase of social distancing, Abhishek, Anita, Astha, Avadesh, Kathya and Madhuri take us through solitary households in the pandemic, and show us what making the most of time looks like.
