Here is a biography of Niall O'Dowd, detailing his early life, publishing career, and involvement in the Northern Ireland peace process:
- Niall O'Dowd was born on 18 May 1953 in Thurles, County Tipperary, Ireland, and relocated to Drogheda when he was nine.
- He attended Drogheda CBS and Gormanston College, later graduating from University College Dublin (UCD) in 1977 with a degree in English and Gaelic.
- Shortly after graduating, he emigrated to the United States in June 1978.
- O'Dowd is a pioneer in Irish American media, establishing The Irishman Newspaper in San Francisco before moving to New York to found Irish America magazine, the Irish Voice newspaper, and IrishCentral.com.
- He serves as an adjunct professor of journalism at Columbia University.
- He is also an accomplished author; his works include Fire in the Morning, a book about the Irish people impacted by the 9/11 attacks, and his memoir An Irish Voice.
- Serving as a crucial intermediary between Sinn Féin and the Clinton White House, O'Dowd played a pivotal role in the Northern Ireland peace process.
- He founded the Irish Americans for Clinton campaign and was instrumental in securing a US visa for Gerry Adams in 1994, a move that Adams credited as essential for the first IRA ceasefire.
- His diplomatic efforts earned him an honorary doctorate from UCD and were chronicled in Conor O'Clery's book Daring Diplomacy.
- Additionally, he has been a staunch advocate for immigrant rights, co-founding the Irish Lobby for Immigration Reform to assist undocumented Irish immigrants in the United States.
