  • MYSTERY: The Dexter Killer of Edmonton
    Oct 30 2026

In October 2008, a 38-year-old Edmonton man named Johnny Altinger told friends he had a date with a woman he met on a dating site. He never came home. Altinger had been lured to a rented garage in Edmonton and murdered by Mark Twitchell, a filmmaker who weeks earlier had shot a short film about a man luring victims to a garage to kill them, and who was so fixated on the series Dexter that the press would name him for it. A week earlier, another man had been attacked in that garage and escaped. On Twitchell's laptop, police recovered a deleted document titled SKConfessions: a first-person account of both attacks, written in the voice of a serial killer. In this episode of Murder: True Crime Stories, host Carter Roy examines the fake dating profile that lured Johnny Altinger, the earlier victim who got out of that garage alive, and the deleted document that prosecutors read to the jury at his murder trial as a confession dressed up as fiction. Please note, this episode contains descriptions of extreme violence and may not be suitable for all audiences.

  • UNSOLVED: Cindy James, Pt. 1
    Nov 3 2026

In 1982, Cindy James was running a Vancouver treatment center for preschoolers with serious emotional and behavioral problems, and the two psychiatrists on staff reported to her. That October, months after leaving her sixteen-year marriage, the 38-year-old nurse called police to report obscene phone calls from a man who knew her name. She would call them close to a hundred more times over the next seven years. She hired a private detective she could not afford, moved six times, and legally changed her name. None of it stopped. On May 25th, 1989, Cindy deposited her paycheck at a Richmond bank machine and never made it home. In Part 1 of Murder: True Crime Stories, host Carter Roy traces the campaign of letters and fires that found her at every new address, the police officer who moved into her house twelve days after meeting her, and the doubt that crept into her case file until the people investigating her stopped believing her. Please note, this episode contains descriptions of sexual violence and discussion of suicidal ideation and may not be suitable for all audiences.

  • UNSOLVED: Villisca Axe Murders Pt. 2
    Oct 29 2026

In Part 2 of Murder: True Crime Stories, host Carter Roy follows the decades of suspects, theories and trials that never produced a conviction for the Villisca axe murders. The investigation started with a crime scene hundreds of people had already walked through, and it never recovered from that. Private detectives, grand juries, a state senator and a traveling minister all became part of the case. The minister, Lyn George Jacklin Kelly, was tried twice for the murders: the first jury hung and the second acquitted him, and no one has been charged in the years since. Researchers have pointed to a run of axe killings along Midwestern rail lines in the same era as a possible connection, though nothing has ever tied any of them to the house on East Second Street. More than a century later, the Villisca axe murders remain officially unsolved, no one has been convicted, and eight people, six of them children, have never had an answer. Please note, this episode contains descriptions of extreme violence and may not be suitable for all audiences.
