    Slippy Lane

    One of Mixenden’s oldest lanes, it was originally cobbled. It has several twists and turns. Part of it has become Mixenden Road, and the south-eastern part, Roper Green.

  • Jumples Mill

    Jumples Mill

    In 1500 William Lister built a fulling mill - cloth was beaten with wooden hammers to clean it. A mill damn collected water to serve the wheel. Steam engines replaced water power in 1826.

  • Clough Brewery

    Clough Brewery

    Clough Farm, a brewery since 1797, was taken over by Thomas Ramsden in 1881 who established Ramsden Stone Clough Brewery. Ram’s ale, Stone Trough ale and Double Stout are some of their brews.

  • Bronze Age Urn

    Bronze Age Urn

    In 1877, a large Bronze Age Urn containing cremation remains was found in a stone cist by a grave digger in the grounds of Mount Zion Chapel. Made of sun baked clay, it is ornamented by dots.

    Mixenden Treasure

    In 1510 nine men set out from Bingley to Soil Hill to find a hoard of half buried treasure. The cunning men believed they would outwit the demon who protected the treasure, but got lost in the mist.

    In 1963 an archaeological group from Ovenden secondary school discovered a section of Roman road from Manchester to Ilkley on Ogden Moor crossing the north end of the reservoir.

  • Mixenden Reservoir

    Reservoir

    In the 1950s Halifax needed a bigger water supply. The engineers J.F. Bateman commenced the construction of Mixenden Reservoir in 1867. It was built to hold 106 million gallons.

    Mixenden Bowling Club was built behind the flats and played a central part of Yorkshire bowling, hosting championships for able bodied and disabled clubs. The club thrived with three teams.
