Josh Safdie assembled one of the more deliberately cast ensembles in recent American cinema for *Marty Supreme* — Timothée Chalamet as a New York ping-pong hustler, Gwyneth Paltrow in her first real screen return after years away from acting, Kevin O'Leary in his feature film debut, Tyler Okonma playing against everything his public persona suggests, and an actual deaf Japanese table tennis champion who had never acted before. Each choice follows the same principle Safdie used in *Uncut Gems*: find the person who doesn't need to fake what the role requires.
Behind every major casting decision is a biography worth understanding — career arcs, family lineages, and public personas that Safdie is either drawing on directly or inverting with precision. Knowing who these people are outside the film makes the casting logic land with considerably more weight than the story alone can provide.
