• Peace in the Middle of the Chaos — with Jay Kim

Join us at The Bright Side for your daily dose of positive news and inspiration: https://livethebrightside.com/What if peace isn't something we find after life finally slows down? What if it's possible to experience God's peace right in the middle of our busy, distracted, and sometimes overwhelming lives?Pastor and author Jay Y. Kim returns to the Live Faith First podcast to explore a different way of living, inspired by his new book, The Pace of Peace. Drawing from the ancient Christian prayer practice known as the Ignatian Examen, Jay introduces five movements that help us become more aware of God's presence in everyday life: presence, gratitude, reflection, confession, and surrender.Elliot and Jay explore why multitasking can keep us from living deeply, how gratitude frees us from the endless pursuit of more, and why a moment of reflection can transform our relationships. They also revisit one of the Bible's most beautiful stories of restoration—Jesus meeting Peter on the seashore after Peter's denial—and discuss how confession can help us move beyond both pride and shame. The conversation ultimately turns to our desire for control. Jay explains why peace isn't found in managing every outcome but in trusting God enough to surrender our plans and pursue deeper communion with him.You don't need an empty calendar, a perfect life, or a tropical vacation to begin experiencing peace. You can begin right where you are.In this episode:Why peace is more than peace and quietThe five movements of the Ignatian ExamenHow multitasking and distraction undermine a deeper lifeFinding God's presence in the middle of a busy dayWhy gratitude is an antidote to striving and envyThe power of pausing before reactingHow Jesus restored Peter instead of retaliatingRethinking confession as a return to our true identityBreaking free from the lies of pride and shameMoving from control to communion with GodWhat Jesus teaches us about surrender in GethsemaneJay Y. Grief doesn’t follow a timeline. It doesn’t look the same for everyone. And it isn’t something we simply “get over.”

In this deeply personal conversation, Elliot sits down with author Laura Busse to talk about the unimaginable loss of her 23-year-old son, Evan, who died by suicide in 2021. Laura shares who Evan was—a brilliant young man with a huge heart for people on the margins—and what happened when her family suddenly found themselves navigating grief, trauma, guilt, and questions they never expected to face.

Laura describes herself as once being “grief illiterate.” After Evan’s death, she discovered that grief reaches far beyond sadness, affecting our bodies, identities, relationships, families, and even our relationship with God. She also talks candidly about her anger with God—and why wrestling with Him ultimately drew her closer rather than driving her away.

Elliot and Laura also explore how differently members of the same family can grieve, the guilt that often follows suicide loss, and why people who are hurting need our presence more than our explanations. Laura offers practical guidance for walking alongside someone in grief: keep showing up, remember the difficult dates, resist the urge to fix their pain, and give them permission to grieve in their own way.

And perhaps most importantly, Laura reminds us that healing doesn't require leaving the person we love behind. As she puts it, “There’s no finish line to grief. I am healing.”

Laura Busse is an author, speaker, certified grief coach, and founder of Grief and Hope, a ministry devoted to helping people navigate profound loss and rediscover hope and healing. After her 23-year-old son, Evan, died by suicide in 2021, Laura began combining her lived experience of traumatic loss with grief education and more than 20 years of experience as a Bible study author and teacher. Laura is the author of The Unimaginable: God, Grief, and the Questions That Won’t Go Away.

Change is inevitable. Sometimes we choose it. Sometimes it chooses us. And even the changes we celebrate—a wedding, graduation, a new baby, a new season of life—can bring unexpected loss and grief.

In this episode of the Live Faith First Podcast, Elliot sits down with pastor, author, and birder Courtney Ellis to talk about her book, Weathering Change: Seeking Peace Amid Life’s Tough Transitions.

Courtney explains why change is so difficult, how we can prepare spiritually for transitions before they arrive, and why curiosity and self-kindness can help us navigate the uncertain spaces between what was and what comes next. Drawing lessons from Scripture and the natural world, Courtney explores “ecotones,” aging, adaptability, resilience, and what water can teach us about finding a new path when life puts a boulder in our way.

Elliot and Courtney also discuss what it means to encounter God in seasons of disorder, why we shouldn't pressure ourselves to immediately discover the “lesson” in our suffering, and how remembering God's past faithfulness can anchor us when the future feels uncertain.

Whether you're facing a career transition, an empty nest, aging, a changing relationship, loss, or simply a season that doesn't look the way you expected, this conversation offers a reminder: change is hard, but we don't face it alone.

Courtney’s newest book, Weathering Change, combines Scripture, pastoral wisdom, personal stories, and lessons from creation to explore how we can approach life's transitions with preparation, curiosity, adaptability, and resilience.

Courtney Ellis is an author, speaker, pastor, podcaster, and avid birder based in Orange County, California. She serves alongside her husband, Daryl, at Presbyterian Church of the Master in Mission Viejo, where they have pastored together for more than twelve years.

Courtney holds an M.A. in English Literature from Loyola University and an M.Div. from Princeton Theological Seminary. She is the author of seven books published by InterVarsity Press, Tyndale, and Broadleaf, including Looking Up: A Birder's Guide to Hope Through Grief and her newest book, Weathering Change: Seeking Peace Amid Life's Tough Transitions. She also hosts The Thing With Feathers, a podcast exploring birds and hope through conversations with ornithologists, naturalists, pastors, artists, poets, and others.

  • Why the End Times Should Give You Hope, Not Fear
    Sep 2 2026
Join us at The Bright Side for your daily dose of positive news and inspiration: https://livethebrightside.com/What if Christians have been thinking about the end times all wrong? For many of us, conversations about Jesus’ return immediately bring up debates about the rapture, tribulation, millennium, Antichrist, or trying to figure out when it will all happen. But for the earliest Christians—and for generations of believers facing suffering and persecution—the return of Jesus was fundamentally a message of hope.In this episode of the Live Faith First Podcast, Elliot Sands sits down with pastor and author Benjamin Vrbicek, author of The Restoration of All Things: How the Promise of Christ’s Return Brings Us Comfort Today, to rediscover that hope.Rather than trying to construct an end-times timeline, Benjamin invites us to consider what Jesus’ return actually promises: bodies restored, injustice answered, suffering ended, relationships made whole, and creation finally freed from the brokenness we experience today.Elliot and Benjamin explore the difference between heaven and the new heavens and new earth, whether Christians should fear final judgment, what Revelation is actually trying to communicate, and why the promise that God will ultimately make all things right can change how we live today. For anyone who has found end-times conversations confusing, frightening, or simply exhausting, this is a different kind of conversation about Jesus’ return—one centered on the promise that this broken world will not always be this way.Benjamin Vrbicek is an author and the lead teaching pastor at Community Evangelical Free Church in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Before entering pastoral ministry, Benjamin studied mechanical and aerospace engineering at the University of Missouri. He later earned his Master of Divinity from Covenant Theological Seminary.Benjamin has written extensively about Christian life, ministry, and theology and previously served as managing editor for Gospel-Centered Discipleship. His books include Don't Just Send a Resume, Struggle Against Porn, and the coauthored Blogging for God's Glory in a Clickbait World. His newest book, The Restoration of All Things: How the Promise of Christ’s Return Brings Us Comfort Today, moves the conversation about the end times away from sensationalism and speculation and back toward the biblical promise of hope—especially for those who are suffering.Benjamin and his wife, Brooke, have six children and live in Pennsylvania.Elliot Sands is the host of the Live Faith First podcast—a dynamic space where faith meets real-world challenges. How do you build businesses without losing your family?

Can you embrace AI without sacrificing your creativity?

And what does sailing across the Pacific Ocean teach you about trusting God?

In this episode of the Live Faith First Podcast, Elliot Sands sits down with brothers Zach and Jason Francis—entrepreneurs, former HGTV stars, founders, husbands, and fathers—to discuss how faith shapes every area of life, from business and technology to parenting and adventure.

You may know Zach and Jason from HGTV's Tiny Luxury, where they helped pioneer the luxury tiny home movement. Today they're building Willo, an AI-powered business platform designed to help entrepreneurs turn ideas into thriving companies.

    Together they discuss:

    • Sailing across the Pacific as teenagers and how it shaped their faith

    • Why God's creation points us toward His greatness

    • Navigating entrepreneurship with integrity

    • How to use AI without losing your unique voice

    • Raising children in an increasingly technological world

    • Building businesses that serve your family instead of replacing it

    • Why curiosity, adventure, and faith belong together

    • The importance of choosing business partners—and spouses—who "fight fair"

Whether you're an entrepreneur, a parent, a technology enthusiast, or simply trying to follow Jesus in a complicated world, this conversation is filled with practical wisdom and encouragement.

Zach and Jason Francis are entrepreneurs, business builders, AI innovators, and former HGTV personalities best known for co-founding Tiny Heirloom and starring in the hit HGTV series Tiny Luxury. Together, the Francis brothers have launched and acquired numerous businesses spanning real estate, branding, AI, Web3, software, and consumer products.

Growing up in Oregon, Zach and Jason developed an entrepreneurial mindset early, building homes as teenagers before embarking on a nine-month sailing expedition across the Pacific Ocean with their father—an experience that profoundly shaped both their faith and approach to business.

Today they are the co-founders of Willo, an AI-powered business operating platform that helps entrepreneurs launch and run businesses more efficiently while maintaining a distinctly human approach to creativity, leadership, and relationships. Both are passionate about helping founders build companies without sacrificing faith, family, or personal integrity.
