    Participation in interactive documentary is complex – ranging from 'clicking on the world' to commenting on content, crowd-sourcing projects or contributing material. Foremost, however, participation is a concept that cannot be thought of without bearing in mind its social and political dimension. In a conversation with Kate Nash, we unpack participation as a concept with both a long history in documentary theory and loaded with great expectations in emerging documentary cultures; we fathom the significance of interactive documentary in the achievement of citizenship, convening publics and community building; we explore the delicate balance between process and product in participatory media making; we discuss the sensitive issue of power relations; and – revisiting paradigmatic i-docs – we relate theories to actual practices, to finally fathom the potential of i-docs beyond interactivity as a highly fragile, volatile but thus the more so experimental and inspirational phenomenon of our current media culture.

    In dieser Folge nimmt uns Anna Luise Kiss mit auf einen Spaziergang durch die filmische Straßenlandschaft in Potsdam. Anlässlich der Publikation ihres gleichnamigen Buches sprechen wir über das globale Phänomen der Filmstadt-Assemblagen und Forschung gemeinsam mit Bürger*innen vor der eigenen Haustüre. Wir erfahren, wie sich filmhistorische Perspektiven mit sozialwissenschaftlichen Methoden, einem wissenschaftlich-künstlerischen Schreibkonzept und revisionistischen Überlegungen verbinden lassen, inwiefern Straßenbenennung als Palimpseste, als kulturelle Arena und als performativer Raum alles andere als ‘unschuldig’ sind, und wir diskutieren, wieso Mut zu experimenteller und partizipativer Forschung als Beitrag zu open sciences so wichtig ist.

Topical paradigm shifts in negotiating 'the Real'", Judith Aston outlines her latest thinking around polyphony and multi-perspectivity. Linking it to her work of over thirty years with interactive media in the fields of creative media practice, documentary and visual anthropology, she introduces the concept of metamodernism into discourses on interactive narrative and discusses it in a wider public. In her inspiring presentation – followed by a lively Q & A session –, Judith explains why metamodernism can be useful to engage with complexity and uncertainty in documentary making, how it helps us to overcome simplistic binary thinking and why it prepares us to tackle future challenges.
