• Juliana Magalhães Takes the Stand: "I Saw Him Stabbing Her" — Banfield Trial Day 1
    Jan 14 2026

Day 1 of the Brendan Banfield murder trial delivered explosive testimony from the prosecution's star witness — Juliana Peres Magalhães, the Brazilian au pair who was having an affair with Banfield and has admitted to firing one of the shots that killed Joseph Ryan.

Magalhães testified that Banfield told her in October 2022 he wanted to "get rid of" his wife Christine because he didn't want to pay for a divorce or share custody of their daughter. She described how they allegedly created a fake profile on FetLife using Christine's identity to lure Ryan to the home — where prosecutors say he was set up to be framed as an intruder.

According to Magalhães, on the morning of February 24, 2023, Banfield shot Ryan in the head, then stabbed Christine repeatedly in the neck while their 4-year-old daughter waited in the basement. Magalhães testified she shot Ryan a second time at Banfield's direction.

The defense pushed back hard, telling jurors that digital forensics show Christine was the one communicating with Ryan — and that investigators who supported that finding were transferred or reassigned. Defense attorney John Carroll accused prosecutors of using Magalhães's vulnerable position as an immigrant to flip her against his client.

Prosecutors say the blood evidence will prove Banfield's guilt. The defense says the catfishing theory was built on lies.

Banfield has pleaded not guilty to four counts of aggravated murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, felony child abuse, and felony child cruelty. If convicted on all counts, he faces life in prison without the possibility of parole plus 13 additional years. The trial is expected to last four weeks.

  • FBI Agent Coffindaffer On Banfield Investigation Failures + Nick Reiner Case Update
    Jan 14 2026

The Brendan Banfield murder trial is underway — and retired FBI Special Agent Jennifer Coffindaffer is here to break down the investigation problems, the star witness credibility issues, and what the jury should be watching for. Plus: explosive new developments in the Nick Reiner case.

Brendan Banfield faces four counts of aggravated murder for allegedly orchestrating the February 2023 killings of his wife Christine and Joseph Ryan with help from the family's au pair Juliana Peres Magalhaes. But the prosecution's own digital forensics expert concluded Christine controlled the FetLife account — not Brendan. Officer Brendan Miller's findings were peer-reviewed and confirmed. Then he was transferred out of the unit. The lead detective was reassigned. The original prosecutor was removed after being found drinking at 8 a.m.

Now the entire case rests on Juliana, who changed her story after a year in jail and took a plea deal that sends her home to Brazil. She wrote from jail that she was "heartbroken" for what she was doing to Brendan and that she loved him. Her sentencing is scheduled after his trial to ensure continued cooperation.

Coffindaffer also examines the Nick Reiner case, where sources say the accused admits killing his parents but claims he's the victim of a conspiracy. His schizoaffective medication was changed a month before the murders. The weapon is missing. The autopsy is sealed.

Both cases raise critical questions about witness credibility, investigation integrity, and what happens when the evidence doesn't support the theory. Subscribe for daily Banfield trial coverage.

  • THE STAR WITNESS: FBI Agent Coffindaffer On Whether Juliana's Testimony Can Convict Banfield
    Jan 13 2026

Juliana Peres Magalhaes is the most important witness in the Brendan Banfield murder trial. She's also the most problematic. Retired FBI Special Agent Jennifer Coffindaffer joins us to break down what happens when your entire case depends on a woman who flipped to go home. Juliana was the Banfield family's au pair. Prosecutors say she helped Brendan plan and execute the murders of Christine Banfield and Joseph Ryan in February 2023.

For a year after her arrest, she told police the same story Brendan did. Then she changed it. She pleaded guilty to manslaughter. She got time served. Her sentencing is scheduled after Banfield's trial — to make sure she keeps cooperating. From jail, Juliana wrote to her mother that she was "heartbroken for doing this to Brendan" and that she still loved him. But she said it was the right thing to do because she wanted to come home. Coffindaffer has spent decades at the FBI evaluating cooperating witnesses. She knows how to distinguish truth from desperation. In this interview, she examines Juliana's credibility, the evidence prosecutors need to corroborate her story, and how the defense will attack her when she takes the stand. The prosecution says Brendan pressured Juliana and told her it was "too late to back out." The defense says she's lying to buy her freedom. Subscribe for daily trial coverage as this case unfolds.

  • THE STAR WITNESS: Defense Attorney Bob Motta On How To Destroy Juliana's Credibility At Trial
    Jan 13 2026

The prosecution's case against Brendan Banfield lives or dies with Juliana Peres Magalhaes. Defense attorney Bob Motta joins the Banfield Channel to explain exactly how the defense should tear her apart.

Juliana spent a year in jail telling police the same story Brendan did — that Joseph Ryan was an intruder and they shot him in self-defense. Then she got a deal. Plead to manslaughter. Time served. Go home to Brazil. Her sentencing is scheduled after Banfield's trial to make sure she keeps cooperating.

From jail, she wrote to her mother that she was "heartbroken for doing this to Brendan" and that she still loved him. But she wanted to come home.

Motta explains how to weaponize that letter on cross-examination. He breaks down how to frame her year-long lie for the jury — was she finally telling the truth, or did she just find a better lie when freedom was on the table?

The prosecution is positioning Juliana as a reluctant participant who was told it was "too late to back out." Motta dismantles that framing and explains what the defense should be highlighting instead. He identifies the biggest mistakes attorneys make when cross-examining cooperating witnesses and what Banfield's team needs to avoid.

The prosecution dropped her charge from murder to manslaughter. She walks free if she delivers. Motta explains how to make the jury understand exactly what her testimony cost — and what it's worth.

If Juliana falls apart on the stand, what does the prosecution have left? Subscribe for complete trial coverage.
