What is coaching—and what should actually happen during a coaching session?
If you’ve never experienced effective coaching, it can be difficult to understand. Most of us know what it feels like to receive advice, be told what to do, or talk through the same problem repeatedly. Coaching is different.
Good coaching helps you see something you couldn’t see before.
You may naturally have a major realization about yourself once every few years. You suddenly recognize a relationship pattern, understand why you keep procrastinating, or see how one of your beliefs has been shaping your behaviour.
Coaching accelerates that process.
In this episode, I explain how coaching creates the questions, perspectives, and emotional shifts that lead to those realizations—and why simply repeating your story is not enough to create meaningful change.
I also break down the two main ways I help people move through resistance.
The first is through the mind: asking targeted questions that challenge perceived limitations, expand awareness, and help you become more resourceful.
The second is through emotion: helping you stop avoiding the discomfort that appears when you step outside your comfort zone. That discomfort may show up as fear, shame, perfectionism, procrastination, overthinking, scrolling, or other forms of distraction.
In this episode, we explore:
- The difference between coaching and advice
- Why insight and awareness are essential for growth
- How repeating the same story can keep you stuck
- Why effective coaching should change your perspective
- How questions can challenge perceived limitations
- Why procrastination and perfectionism are often protective mechanisms
- How emotional avoidance creates coping and distraction
- Questions that can help you process and release resistance
- Who you might become without the feeling holding you back
- Why mindset work must eventually lead to action
Coaching is not about giving you all the answers. It is about helping you see yourself, other people, and your situation from a less limited perspective.
It is the process of accelerating the wisdom and awareness we would otherwise gain slowly through years of experience.
But insight alone is not the final goal. The purpose of mindset work is to help you take action, gain experience, develop your abilities, and create real changes in your life.
What would you do differently if the feeling holding you back was no longer there?
