Cold, desperate, and alone: a structural engineer walked roughly forty miles across Idaho’s high ridges with a bone-deep laceration that required forty-one stitches - and a four-ounce roll of athletic tape he left behind decided everything. How did a bent trekking pole and a choice at mile forty-one keep him alive, and why did he deliberately avoid the exposed ridgelines that night?
In this episode, we follow the timeline from 4:45 AM on December 7 to the moment a county inspector opened a cabin door at 7:15 AM on December 9. You will hear what equipment he carried, the decision he made at mile sixty-two, and the single detail that changed the outcome - could one small omission explain why he had to walk out in the dark?
Person: Howard Roberts
Date: December 7-9, 2019
Location: Parrón Wilderness, central Idaho
Distance walked: approximately 40 miles
Injury treatment: 41 stitches
- He left Dunbar Trailhead at 4:45 AM on December 7 to run his self-designed Parrón Ridge Hundred route.
- He cached supplies at Fenner Creek (mile 41) in late October and left four ounces of partially unrolled athletic tape in the canister.
- At about mile 62 on the night of December 8 he struck a granite shelf and suffered a deep laceration below his right kneecap.
- He improvised a tourniquet by cutting off a compression sleeve, torquing a trekking pole through the sleeve, and bracing it for 22 minutes in 11°F temperatures.
- He walked about thirteen hours in the dark and wind gusts over 50 mph before being found alive in a cabin at 7:15 AM on December 9; the bent pole was visible in the doorway.
