• FULL THURSDAY SHOW: Thirsty Thursday Football Forecast, Augie hockey coach Garrett Raboin, Lincoln OC Travis Schafer (father of QB studs Tate & Brody)
    Oct 17 2025
Imagine being the father of the all-time leading passer at not just his high school, but the entire 12-year history of the state's largest class, who caps off his prolific career leading his team to a state championship. Pretty cool, huh? Now imagine his younger brother, a sophomore, replacing him the very next season and taking almost zero adjustment time to torch defenses all the same... and also pilot the same school to a state title repeat. Double the pride! Double the fun! Now, imagine being a part of the offensive coaching staff that schemes up the plays for both sons and gets to be around them through every practice and every locker room celebration. Then, you get to take over the play-calling duties for the younger son in his junior season, when he once again lights up defenses and scoreboards. Oh, and the boys' older brother was a senior receiver at the same school the first year you joined the coaching staff, meaning you have had the opportunity to coach all three sons at the varsity level. This has been the football life of Lincoln offensive coordinator and Sioux Falls native Travis Schafer the last five seasons. His oldest son, Ty, the receiver, went on to win a national championship in college with Northwestern (Iowa). Youngest son Brody was the state's best QB and state championship MVP last season right after middle son Tate held those distinctions in 2023. Tate is now a redshirt freshman at the University of Sioux Falls and is expected to make his first career college start next week after coming off the bench — one play into the game — to throw for 384 yards, run for 70, and scored five total touchdowns in a 35-14 road win at Southwest Minnesota State to wash away some of the blues from the Cougars' heartbreaking come-from-behind loss to arch rival Augustana the week before. Yeah, the father, Travis Schafer, is beaming with pride, and he beamed through a 22-minute Happy Hour conversation about his kids and how they grew up to be champions. He also gave insight into working under Patriots' head coach Jared Fredenburg through 28 wins in Lincoln's last 30 games. It's all part of a Thirsty Thursday Football Forecast edition of Happy Hour from the Orion Pub. John Gaskins and Sioux Falls Live sportswriter Trent Singer lead off with previews of this weekend's games of local interest:
    • #2 South Dakota State at Murray State
    • #22 South Dakota at Northern Iowa
    • HSFB: #1 Brandon Valley at #4 Harrisburg
    • Nebraska at Minnesota
    • #11 Tennessee at #6 Alabama

Specifically, what should we expect out of the Jackrabbits and Coyotes as road favorites at bottom-tier MVFC teams who are struggling to score and win? What type of "Battle of the Burbs" do we expect from the Lynx and Tigers?

Can the Huskers prove Matt Rhule right, that the explosion of speculation involving his potential candidacy at Penn State was a distraction the Big Red are capable of overcoming, along with their dark recent history against the Gophers (1-6 vs P.J. Fleck and a decade since their last win in Minneapolis)?

Between all the gridiron gabbing, a conversation with Augustana hockey coach Garrett Raboin, whose Vikings are receiving votes in the Top 25 poll at the start of their third season of existence and opened the season with a two-game split at Minnesota-Duluth, who is receiving even more votes.

How has Raboin turned Augie into such a high caliber program in such a short time? What kind of dues did the Vikings have to pay in their own conference the first couple seasons? What kind of style should fans at fancy Midco Arena expect to see?

Patrons in that facility will see a Top 25 ranked opponent on South Dakota ice for the first time in the state's history on Friday and Saturday when No. 15 Arizona State skates in. That's right, hockey powerhouse Arizona State. Raboin explains that oddity, too.

  • FULL WED. SHOW: SDSU alumni check-in (Rogers, Wilde, Gronowski), USD coach Travis Johansen, and Husker Online reporter Robin Washut (Matt Rhule/Penn State mania)
    Oct 16 2025
At 6-0, it has been so far, so good, for No. 2 South Dakota State in the Dan Jackson era — also known as the post-scorched earth exodus of head coach Jimmy Rogers, his entire SDSU coaching staff, and 15 SDSU players to Washington State. Oh, and life after the school's GOAT quarterback Mark Gronowski (Iowa), blazing top-end speed wide receiver (Griffin Wilde) bolted to the bigger money and bigger stage of Power Four conference football. They're all gone. Forgotten? Depends on the Jacks fan. Some are keeping tabs if not cheering on the former Jacks. Some may say "out of sight, out of mind."
But, let's face it: We all have busy lives and it is tough to watch every game of some of these men who were major parts of two national titles and last year's 12-win run to the FCS semifinals.

With midseason here, just in case you were curious about their performances through the first several games, Happy Hour host John Gaskins does a deep dive. Man, what a dive. Rogers and Wilde were both part of stealth Game 6 efforts on the road against Power Four powerhouses this past weekend.
Hear about, and from, Rogers after his 33-point underdog Cougars — some call them the "Washington State Jackrabbits" — almost pulled off the upset of the year in the FBS at Ole Miss. What is as amazing as the nailbiter Rogers and his defense backed Lane Kiffin and his juggernaut offense into is how quickly Rogers and his staff have kept what appeared to be a sinking ship (especially on defense, Rogers' side) afloat after three stinkers to open the season. Then, an update on Wilde, one of the Big 10's top 10 receivers in his first year at Northwestern, which is one of that league's least productive offenses (guided, by the way, by former SDSU offensive coordinator Zach Lujan). Hear Wilde's wide-eyed remarks about the Wildcats. And what about Gronowski at Iowa? There's a lot to unpack. He hasn't been dazzling nor disastrous in the Hawkeyes' 4-2 start. Let's just say that for both Iowa fans and Gronowski fans, hopefully the jets are warming up for a late season flight. What has kept the former Walter Payton Award winner grounded? So many things. After checking in on former SDSU standouts, hear Gaskins' weekly chat with South Dakota head coach Travis Johansen. Saturday's 19-14 win at Indiana State to move to 4-3 was a mixed bag of things for Coyote fans to pump their fists (defensive lockdown, 45 minutes of possession, L.J. Phillips' 187 yards to remain the nation's leading rusher) and yet shake their fists (penalties, settling for field goals, not getting the ball downfield).
Johansen goes behind the headlines and numbers, as always, then looks ahead to a road game at Northern Iowa, a program and "weird" venue Johansen is firmly familiar with. The show rounds out with a trip to Lincoln and a chat with veteran Husker Online reporter Robin Washut for insight into the latest coaching distraction at Nebraska. Matt Rhule has been connected to the Penn State opening and on Monday addressed speculation he just may be a candidate. What should we make of what Rhule said? How strong of a candidate is he, really? And how do we evaluate his 15-14 run at Nebraska, sitting at 5-1 in his third season?

On Friday, Rhule's Huskers are at Minnesota, a place the Big Red has not won since 2015. How do the Huskers match up with the 4-2 Gophers, who sweated out a 27-20 win but gave up over 450 yards to Purdue last week?
