Gilbert House Fellowship #500: Isaiah 19
    Nov 1 2026
We've been taught that idols are nothing more than carved blocks of wood or stone. That happens not to be the case. Again this week, we encounter the Hebrew word used by Isaiah translated to "idols,” ellilim, which scholar Christopher B. Hays showed in a recent academic paper derives from the Akkadian name of the Mesopotamian father-god, Ellil. This is fascinating, because scholar William Gallagher noted in a paper published about 30 years ago that Ellil is the origin of the name translated "Lucifer,” Helel, in Isaiah 14:12. In other words, rather than lifeless wood or stone, the "idols" of Isaiah are actually minions (demons?) of the entity we identify as Shemihazah, the fallen Watcher who led the rebellion of Genesis 6:1–4. Isaiah's oracle concerning Egypt prophesies the coming of a "fierce king,” probably the Assyrian king Esarhaddon, who conquered Egypt in the year 671 BC. But as with many of the Bible's prophecies, there is a "not yet" fulfillment, and the chapter concludes with the Lord's declaration that a day would come when Egypt ("My people") and Assyria (“the work of My hands") would make peace, worship God, with a highway between the two and Israel as the center of the nations. By the way, this is our 500th Bible study going back to September 2014. We’re asking for your help to Build Bunker Better! Gilbert House Fellowship #499: 1 Enoch 70–71
    Oct 25 2026
The Book of 1 Enoch is not in the Bible, and for good reason. This week, we encounter two possible reasons why. In chapter 71, Enoch declares that he saw “the sons of the holy angels.” However, it's not translated that way in every version available to us. The older translations, like the R. H. Charles rendering, translates that phrase, "the holy sons of God." Obviously, angels cannot procreate, as Jesus said (Matt. 22:30), so if the more modern translation accurately represents the original text, this contradicts scripture and thus excludes 1 Enoch from the Bible. We run into the same problem a few verses later, where Enoch is either shown the Son of Man or declared to be the Son of Man. The oldest translation, by Richard Laurence in 1821, opted for the latter reading. If this is correct, that would obviously contradict Jesus’ application of the title to himself. It's for reasons like this, and others we've pointed out over the months that we've studied 1 Enoch, that we do not believe it should be in the Bible. However, the fact that there are New Testament doctrines that first appear 1 Enoch makes it worth your while to read and study it. We’re asking for your help to Build Bunker Better! We’ve decided to remain in our home, but we need certain upgrades to make it safe for Derek given his mobility limitations compounded by COPD. Find out more at Gilberthouse.org/donate. Gilbert House Fellowship #498: Isaiah 18
    Oct 18 2026
IS THIS a prophecy of the United States hiding in plain sight? Isaiah 18 is a mysterious chapter that seems to describe a future attack on Jerusalem by a faraway tall, clean-shaven people, feared far and wide, whose land is divided by rivers. If that doesn't describe the United States, what does? However, it's not as simple as that. The verse describing the tall, clean-shaven people is admittedly speculative—not just by us, but by the translators themselves. We take this to mean—speculatively, of course—that there is a future day coming when the United States joins in an attack on Jerusalem. This, of course, is consistent with the prophecies of Armageddon in Ezekiel 38–39 and Revelation 19. As we said during our study, we consider this one "obfuscated until obvious." We’re asking for your help to Build Bunker Better! We’ve decided to remain in our home, but we need certain upgrades to make it safe for Derek given his mobility limitations compounded by COPD. Gilbert House Fellowship #497: Isaiah 17
    Oct 11 2026
AN ALLIANCE between the northern kingdom of Israel and the Aramaean kingdom of Damascus forms the backdrop of this prophecy of that city’s ultimate destruction. In a callback to chapter 7 of Isaiah, this is an “already but not yet” prophecy of the destruction of Damascus. It was captured by the Assyrians in 732 BC, but it has continued as an occupied city (possibly the oldest continuously occupied city on earth, dated back to 9000 BC). The “not yet” is still to come. Verses 12 through 14 of Isaiah 17 describe a coalition of “many peoples” that come against Israel only to bechased like chaff on the mountains before the wind and whirling dust before the storm.” We see this as a prophecy of the war that leads to Armageddon (cf. Ezekiel 38–39 and Revelation 19). It would appear that the ultimate destruction of Damascus takes place in the end times. This week’s question: Who are the Amalekites today? • Gilbert House Fellowship #488: Micah 4–5

Gilbert House Fellowship #488: Micah 4–5
    Jul 12 2026
The Bible foretells a mysterious character called “the Assyrian” who seems to have a role in the end times war against Israel. Who is he? What’s odd is the Hebrew text of Micah 5:5–6 (and Isaiah 14:25, 31:8, and 52:4) lacks the definite article “the.” In other words, there is no “the Assyrian” in the Old Testament. The Hebrew word Assur can referred to Assyria, its capital city, or its chief deity, who was the equivalent of the Sumerian/Babylonian god Enlil (called Ellil in Akkad), El of Canaan, Dagon of the Philistines, and Milcom of Ammon—and thus Molech, the netherworld god who demanded the sacrifice of children from his followers. We believe the passages in Micah are an “already but not yet” prophecy, referring to the imminent conquest of the northern kingdom of Israel by Assyria, which occurred during Micah’s lifetime in 722 BC, and a future return of Assur in the end times as the Destroyer, Abaddon/Apollyon, who is released from the abyss for five months to torment those without the seal of God on their foreheads. Gilbert House Fellowship #496: Isaiah 15–16
    Oct 4 2026
THE DESTRUCTION of the kingdom of Moab by the Assyrians was prophesied by Isaiah, although God took no pleasure in it. At the time Isaiah wrote, the Assyrians were expanding their empire to the west and swallowing up smaller kingdoms like Israel, Ammon, Edom, and Moab. The Moabites had been enemies of Israel and Judah for centuries by the time of Isaiah. Through the prophet, God warned Moab of its imminent destruction. We discussed the possibility that Isaiah chapters 15 and 16 is an "already but not yet" prophecy, with final fulfillment to come as part of a Psalm 83 war, which has been written about by our friend Bill Salus. This week's question: what's the connection between Paul's teaching that women should have their heads covered in church "because of the angels" and the Book of 1 Enoch? Here's the link to the study by Dr. Michael Heiser on 1 Corinthians 11 regarding head coverings for women in church and the first century belief in a connection between long hair and fertility. The Book of 1 Enoch prophesies a day when evil kings and rulers would be judged by a messianic figure called the Elect One—the Son of Man. As we’ve mentioned previously, this section of 1 Enoch is the first Jewish text in which “the Son of Man” is used as a title—a title Jesus applied to himself 78 times. We also discuss the differences between “angels” and cherubim, seraphim, and ophanim (Ezekiel’s wheels): and the identity of the Son of Man as one with the Lord of Spirits, God the Father—Yahweh. The secrets of creation were contained in an oath—and one of the fallen Watchers demanded that Michael reveal to him the "secret name" so that those who hurt the oath would quake before it. That's one of the revelations in this week's study of 1 Enoch. Bear in mind, this section of the book was written just before the birth of Jesus so any specifics regarding the names of fallen angels and their abilities or misdeeds must be taken with a grain of salt. However, it is interesting that this section, in the translation by R. H. Charles, is titled, "The Names and Functions of the (fallen Angels and) Satans.” Apparently, during the Second Temple, it was believed there was more than one Satan. We need to remember that Satan was not even considered a fallen angel until Ignatius of Antioch in the early second century A.D.. Again, the study is important because of New Testament doctrines that are not found in any Jewish writing prior to 1 Enoch.
