What does it mean to truly flourish? It is one of the oldest questions in human history, and every culture, philosophy, and religion has tried to answer it. Christianity offers a response that is both simple and profound: the good life is found not in wealth, achievement, or personal freedom without limits, but in living as we were designed to live. Human beings were created by God and for God, and when we live outside of that design, things simply do not work the way they should. Just as a tool used for the wrong purpose produces frustration instead of function, a life lived apart from God produces restlessness instead of peace.

The path to flourishing involves two essential movements. The first is defeating sin. Sin is not merely a religious rule but anything that works against the design God built into us. Culture often promotes the idea that true freedom means doing whatever you want with no accountability to God or others, but this vision of freedom has produced broken relationships, addiction, and deep loneliness rather than the flourishing it promised. The second movement is actively pursuing holiness. Removing sin is not enough on its own. The empty space must be filled with something good, and that goodness takes shape through two great loves: loving God through consistent prayer, worship, Scripture, and generosity, and loving our neighbors through genuine community, care for the poor, welcome for strangers, and investment in real relationships.

No one walks this path perfectly, and that is not the expectation. The goal is progress, not perfection. Winning the battle more often than not, day by day, choosing to move toward God rather than away from Him. This isn't about earning God's favor. Salvation is freely given through faith in Jesus Christ. Living this way is a grateful response to what He has already done. God created each of us to flourish, and the good life becomes real when we know who made us, live within His design, and let His grace shape the way we live.

Every person carries a deep sense that the world is not the way it is supposed to be. Pain, injustice, and brokenness surround us, and that longing for something better is not mere frustration. It is a whisper God has placed on every human heart, pointing us toward the restoration He has promised. Revelation 21 gives us a vivid picture of that promise: a new heaven and a new earth where God makes all things new, where every tear is wiped away, and where the very source of evil has no more access.

Heaven is far richer than most people imagine. It is a place of face-to-face communion with God, where every question and wound finds its answer in His presence. It is a place where we will know others as God always intended them to be, free from the brokenness that strains our relationships now. It is also a place of meaningful work and worship, not the exhausting, sin-corrupted kind we know today, but the kind God originally designed before the curse of Genesis 3 entered the picture. At the same time, Scripture does not shy away from the reality of hell. God's justice demands that evil be answered, and God's love demands that He honor the choices of those who have spent their lives rejecting Him. Hell is not about behavior versus perfection. It is about the pattern of a life that has said no to God.

For those who trust in Christ, the end of the story is already written, and it ends well. That knowledge is not just a comfort for the future. It is a freedom for today. When we truly believe the story ends in glory, fear loses its grip, self-protection loses its appeal, and we are freed to step into whatever God is calling us toward. The kingdom of heaven does not begin at death. It begins the moment we place our trust in Christ, and it only grows fuller from there.

Gratitude is one of the most powerful spiritual disciplines available to us, and it starts with a simple act: remembering. When we look back at what God has already done in our lives, we build a foundation for genuine, lasting thankfulness that changes how we see our present circumstances and our future.

Drawing from Deuteronomy 8, this message explores why Moses called the Israelites to remember God's faithfulness before entering the promised land, and why that same practice matters deeply for us today. Looking back at God's faithfulness grounds our identity, refocuses our attention away from fear and anxiety, and gives us real reasons to trust Him with what lies ahead.

Topics covered include how gratitude acts as a spiritual antidote to anxiety and fear, what it means to remember God's provision in practical and personal ways, how God shapes us through hard seasons and difficult lessons, the significance of the people and places God has placed in our lives, the connection between Israel's wilderness journey and our own in-between seasons of faith, and how the name of Jesus connects to the promise of being led out of captivity and into something better.

This message is grounded in the truth of Isaiah 44:21, that God formed us and will never forget us. Even when we push Him aside, He never stops thinking of us. That truth is the foundation of all genuine gratitude.

Whether you are walking through a difficult season, feeling anxious about the future, or simply looking for a more meaningful way to practice thankfulness, this message offers a biblical and practical framework for building a grateful heart.

Every member of the church is called to share in God's mission to the world. Christians are not primarily a meeting people or a committee people. They are a sent people, going into the world and returning together each week to worship, be encouraged, and be strengthened before heading back out again. This is not a calling reserved for pastors or missionaries. It belongs to every follower of Jesus. The Great Commission in Matthew 28 is a command given to all believers, and Jesus Himself modeled what it means to be sent, leaving the comfort and glory of heaven in obedience to the Father in order to pursue and restore the people He created.

One of the most honest observations Jesus made is found in Luke 10, where He tells His disciples that the harvest is plentiful but the laborers are few. The problem is not a lack of redeemed people. The problem is a shortage of people who see themselves as participants in God's mission and are willing to step into it. Many hold back because of fear, particularly the fear of embarrassment. But when your identity is grounded in how God sees you rather than how others do, that fear loses its grip. Nothing can separate you from the love of God in Christ Jesus, and that truth is the foundation from which you can engage the world with confidence.

Living on mission does not require adding complicated new programs to your life. It begins with simply going where you already go, your workplace, your neighborhood, your school, and being intentional about the people already around you. A practical framework called BLESS helps guide this: Be in prayer for those far from God, Listen deeply to people's stories, create shared Experiences together, Serve people's real needs, and Share what God has meant in your own life. This is not quick work. Most people come to faith through patient, faithful relationship-building over time. But when someone you have been walking alongside finally comes to faith, heaven rejoices, and you get to be part of that.

Pastor Scott York explains what it means to live as a church from Acts 2: 42-47.

The church is one of the most misunderstood concepts in modern Christianity, often reduced to a building, a social club, or a weekly obligation. But Acts 2:42-47 paints a radically different picture. The early church was a covenant community of people who had experienced God's grace and were committed to sharing that grace and with the world. They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching, lived in genuine fellowship (what the Greeks called koinonia, meaning sharing in common), distributed resources to those in need, and wove one another into the rhythm of daily life. This was not occasional community. It was a shared life.

Jesus did not save us to live independently. Mankind's original problem was the desire to go it alone, and we made a mess of everything. Jesus stepped in, died on our behalf, and reestablished the covenant people of God, making a way back to Him through faith. Yet so often after receiving that grace, we turn around and resist depending on anyone else. That posture misses the point entirely. Living as the church means committing to three things: a shared faith that goes beyond Sunday morning, shared resources marked by generosity and radical hospitality, and shared rhythms that make room for other believers in your actual daily life. Whether you are an extrovert or an introvert, the call is not out of your personality. It is out of isolation. The church is not a building. It is a people, united by one Spirit, one faith, and one Lord, and that community is available to anyone willing to step into it fully.

What does it mean to be chosen by God? Election and predestination are two of the most searched and most misunderstood topics in Christian theology. Many people find these words unsettling or overly abstract, but Scripture presents them as deeply personal, profoundly comforting, and practically life-changing. This teaching walks through what the Bible actually says about election and predestination, starting in the Old Testament and moving through the New Testament. God calling Abraham, Moses reminding Israel they were not chosen for their size or strength, Jesus affirming that all the Father gives Him will come to Him, and Paul laying out the full chain of salvation in Romans 8:29-30. These are not isolated verses. They represent the consistent witness of the whole Bible. Romans 8:29-30 outlines five key steps: foreknowledge, predestination, calling, justification, and glorification. Each one is unpacked in a way that is clear and accessible. Foreknowledge is not God simply looking ahead to see who would choose Him. It is a deep, intimate knowledge rooted in love. Predestination means God set a course toward salvation. The call is the moment of spiritual awakening. Justification means the debt of sin is fully cleared through Jesus Christ. And glorification, though future, is written in the past tense by Paul because it is that certain for those who are in Christ. Beyond the theology, this teaching connects the doctrine of election directly to everyday life. Where does your true sense of value come from? Do you live with genuine assurance that God is holding onto you? And how does understanding salvation as a free gift change the way you engage with people around you who are far from God? Topics covered include: what is election in the Bible, what does predestination mean, Romans 8 explained, the golden chain of salvation, what does foreknowledge mean in theology, how does predestination relate to evangelism, Christian assurance of salvation, Reformed theology and the gospel, what does it mean to be chosen by God, and how to find your identity in Christ. Whether you are new to these concepts or have wrestled with them for years, this is a grounded, pastoral, and encouraging look at one of the most important doctrines in the Christian faith. How does the Holy Spirit work in our lives? And how does God continue to grow our faith?

In this sermon from First Presbyterian Church of Douglasville, Rev. James Harper explores Philippians 1:3–11 and what this passage teaches us about the Spirit at work in the lives of believers. Paul's words remind us that our faith is not something we are expected to develop on our own. God is actively at work in us, growing our love, deepening our knowledge and discernment, and helping us become more like Christ. As we explore The Essentials: The Spirit at Work, we consider what it looks like to recognize God's work in our lives and trust Him as He continues the work He has begun.

In This Sermon

How the Holy Spirit works in the life of a Christian What Philippians 1 teaches us about spiritual growth The connection between love, knowledge, and discernment How God continues His work in us What it means to grow in faith together as a Christian community

Few claims in all of Christianity are more debated or more foundational than this: Jesus Christ is the only way to salvation. This is not a fringe idea or a modern invention. It runs consistently through both the Old and New Testaments, from Peter's fearless declaration before the Sanhedrin in Acts 4 to Jesus' own words in John 14:6, where He said He is the way, the truth, and the life, and that no one comes to the Father except through Him. Passages in 1 Timothy, Colossians, Romans, and 1 Corinthians all reinforce the same truth. If the Bible is the foundation of Christian faith, there is no ambiguity on this point.

Common objections to this claim deserve honest engagement. The idea that all religions basically teach the same thing does not hold up under examination. Buddhism, Islam, Judaism, and Christianity hold fundamentally different views of God, humanity, and salvation. The argument that every religion sees part of the truth but none sees all of it actually requires someone to stand above the situation and declare what others are missing, which is itself an exclusive claim. And the charge that believing Jesus is the only way is arrogant contains its own absolute conviction. Every position requires faith in something.

Accepting the exclusive claim of Jesus has real implications for daily life. It brings genuine assurance, because salvation is a gift received through faith, not a performance to be earned. It also carries a responsibility. If Jesus is the only path from spiritual death to spiritual life, then every follower of Christ is called to share that truth with others. That does not mean being harsh or presumptuous about who is in or out. God works in people's hearts on His timeline, not ours. Our role is to point toward Jesus. The invitation to come to Him is open to everyone, regardless of background, history, or past failures.
