ABOUT THIS MESSAGE:
Today we celebrate the festival of Epiphany. It is the second oldest festival celebrated by the church, dating back to the second century. Epiphany means “revealed.” So, in the season of Epiphany we learn how it is that God reveals himself to us. The infant King begins to draw all nations to himself and reveal the mystery that had been hidden – all people would be heirs of salvation through faith in him. God unveiled the mystery that salvation came through Israel for all nations, and the Magi were the first in a long line of Gentiles who would join Israel in worshiping Jesus as King. You and I, too, follow that long line of Gentiles who now worship the King.

ABOUT THIS MESSAGE:
The question in the back of our minds when we make a decision about one thing over another is whether or not what we chose is really better than what might have been. That same question can sneak its way into the heart of a Christian to make them hesitate and doubt as to whether following Jesus and leaving behind the sinful things our hearts love is truly better than what might have been if we clung to them. Today, God’s Word makes it clear for us. John pointed to the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world, the Lamb born to us in the manger on Christmas. And where sin is taken away, real and lasting hope is ours. It’s so much better than what might have been!

ABOUT THIS MESSAGE:
Advent is a season of waiting. We wait for Christmas to come, and we prepare our hearts as we wait for Jesus to return. And waiting is difficult. It is especially difficult when we’re waiting and unable to change our present situation on our own. But that’s exactly what today’s readings from Scripture tell us. This Savior is for people who are held captive by the enemies of sin and death. It is for people who have no power of their own to free themselves. It is for people whose only hope is to patiently and quietly wait for God to act. It is for people who depend on him to set them free. And that’s exactly what our Savior does. He sets us free from a forced servitude to our enemies and replaces it with a free service to our Father.
