• Derek Patrick Daly was born in Dublin, Ireland, on March 11, 1953.
• He financed his early racing aspirations by working as a laborer in Australian iron ore mines, returning with enough money to purchase a Formula Ford car and win the championship.
• Continuing his rapid ascent through the motorsport ranks, he won the British Formula Three Championship in 1977.

• Daly competed in Formula One between 1978 and 1982, ultimately participating in 64 World Championship Grands Prix and accumulating 15 championship points.
• He made a dramatic debut in 1978 at the BRDC International Trophy (a non-championship race), where he memorably wove his way to the front of the pack in torrential rain before a broken visor caused him to crash.
• His two most famous moments both occurred at the Monaco Grand Prix: a spectacular first-corner crash in 1980, and a near-victory in 1982 that ended abruptly when his gearbox seized just laps from the finish line.

• Transitioning to the American CART series in 1982, he started 66 races, earned 21 top-ten finishes, and competed in the Indianapolis 500 six times.
• In 1984, he survived a massive, near-fatal crash at Michigan International Speedway that resulted in severe trauma, including a crushed ankle, a fractured pelvis, and third-degree burns.
• Overcoming his injuries after multiple surgeries, he returned to the track for endurance racing and secured back-to-back victories at the prestigious 12 Hours of Sebring in 1990 and 1991.

• After retiring from the cockpit, Daly launched a successful broadcasting career, spending 10 years as a motor sports color analyst for ESPN while also featuring on networks like NBC, CBS, and Fox.
• He is also a motivational speaker, an entrepreneur, and the author of Race To Win: How to Become a Complete Champion.
• Daly became a United States citizen in 1993 and currently resides in Indiana; his son, Conor Daly, has notably followed in his footsteps as a professional IndyCar driver.
