  • #31 - He Was a Heroin Addict for 25 Years… Now He Helps Others Recover
    Sep 21 2026
Shawn Espinoza is serving 32 years to life. In this episode of Between the Lines, Shawn opens up about growing up in Long Beach, feeling abandoned as a teenager, running away from home, joining a street gang, and searching for the love and validation he felt he was missing. For years, Shawn says that validation came from the streets, gangs, drugs, and prison. He was addicted to heroin for 25 years. Shawn says his life began to change four years ago when he got sober in prison. After hearing his mother’s voice in his head telling him to get off drugs and focus, he started going to recovery groups, surrounded himself with people in the program, and began rebuilding his life one day at a time. Today, Shawn is a state-certified substance abuse disorder counselor and relapse prevention specialist. He says sobriety changed everything — his mindset, his faith, his relationships, his purpose, and the way he sees freedom. In this interview, Shawn also shares how becoming a husband and stepfather gave him a new sense of responsibility and purpose. He talks about remorse, the impact of violence on families, the loss of his own brother, and the moment he finally understood the ripple effect of his actions. Now, Shawn says he wants to use his story to help others before they make the same mistakes. His dream is to build Redeemed Recovery, a nonprofit focused on mentoring youth, supporting recovery, and helping people find a better path. This is a story about addiction, gang life, prison, sobriety, fatherhood, faith, redemption, and the power of a second chance. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

  • #30 - He Sold Drugs to His Own Mom at 6 Years Old
    Sep 14 2026
Raul Olvera has been incarcerated for 27 years. In this episode of Between the Lines, Raul opens up about growing up in Watts and Compton, being raised by his grandmother, and being exposed to drugs, crime, and instability at an age when most kids are still learning how to be children. Raul says his grandmother had him selling cocaine from a window when he was only six or seven years old. One day, the person who came to buy from him was his own mother. As he got older, Raul says that environment shaped the path he followed. He became involved in robberies, stealing cars, and eventually a robbery that led to a life without parole sentence. But Raul’s story does not stop there. Even after coming to prison, Raul says he continued the same lifestyle, selling drugs inside for years. In 2017, he was stabbed 29 times in the yard. His wife was told he had been killed. When he survived, she confronted him with a question that changed the direction of his life: what was he still trying to prove? From that point forward, Raul says he began to change. Today, Raul is a state licensed drug and alcohol counselor. He says learning about addiction helped him understand his mother, his childhood, and the cycle he had been part of for most of his life. Now, instead of selling drugs, Raul spends his days talking to others about recovery and trying to help people change. This is a story about childhood trauma, addiction, crime, accountability, survival, family, counseling, and the belief that even someone serving life can still become someone different.
