Did Royal really give away gold typewriters in essay contests? A question from ATI community member Tammy Smith-McConner brings Greg Fudacz back to the ATI podcast to help David and Everitto find out.

Greg traces gold-plated machines from rare early Blickensderfers to Royal’s dazzling models, including a 24-karat gold Royal KMM covered with the signatures of more than 1,000 sales representatives. Along the way, we talk about clever marketing, the stories collectors can uncover, and why a remarkable typewriter deserves to be used, not just admired.

It all started with one good question. Join us for the conversation, and tell us: If you owned a gold-plated typewriter, would you type on it?

Everything begins with an object, but it’s all about people.

In Part 1 of this fascinating conversation, Austin Typewriter, Ink. Podcast co-hosts David and Everitto sit down with renowned typewriter historian and collector Dr. Peter Weil.

Peter explores Thomas Edison’s surprising connection to early typewriter development, the historical clues hidden in ephemera, the thrill of uncovering forgotten stories, and why careful human research still matters in the age of artificial intelligence.

The conversation also looks at the growing typewriter community, the importance of preserving its history, and the enduring magic that draws collectors, writers, and children to these remarkable machines.

Join us for a journey through the objects, people, and stories that shaped typewriter history.
