  • The One: The Ancient Teaching That Everything Comes From a Single Source
    Oct 3 2026

This episode begins with Plotinus, the third-century philosopher of Rome, and his teaching that all reality depends on an indivisible first principle called the One or the Good. The main sources are Porphyry’s Life of Plotinus and the Enneads, especially treatises on the One, Intellect, Soul, ascent, and union. Plato’s Republic and Parmenides provide crucial antecedents, but the episode distinguishes Plotinus’s creative interpretation from Plato’s own texts. It follows Plotinus through Alexandria, his study with Ammonius, his failed attempt to reach Persian and Indian philosophy, his Roman teaching circle, Porphyry’s editorial work, and later reception by Augustine, Pseudo-Dionysius, Arabic Plotinian texts, and Marsilio Ficino. Rebirth and karma are not the governing framework here; the episode instead examines procession, return, moral purification, contemplation, and the question of personal transformation without treating these as identical to Hindu, Buddhist, Jain, or modern nondual teachings. The central dispute is historical, philosophical, and spiritual: can multiplicity come from absolute simplicity, and can language transmit an experience Plotinus says lies beyond ordinary thought? The episode treats union with the One as a serious ancient spiritual claim while separating doctrine, argument, testimony, manuscript transmission, and metaphysical belief.

  • The World Soul: Did the Ancients Believe the Universe Was Alive?
    Sep 26 2026

This episode follows Plato’s Timaeus, a fourth-century BCE Greek dialogue where the cosmos is described as a living being with soul and intelligence. The story moves through the dialogue’s qualified account of cosmic order, the body of the universe, the mathematical construction of the world soul, and the circles of Same and Different. It then traces how the problem changed as Aristotle tested the mechanism in On the Soul, later testimony preserved Stoic accounts of a rational living cosmos, Plotinus placed Soul within a hierarchy of the One and Intellect, Porphyry arranged Plotinus’s writings, and Calcidius translated and commented on part of the Timaeus for Latin readers. The episode separates Plato’s text from later reception and keeps open the central question: whether the world soul was meant literally, philosophically, or both.

  • Nirvana: What Did the Ancient Teachers Actually Mean by Enlightenment?
    Sep 19 2026

This episode begins in an early Buddhist dialogue at the Deer Park, where Sāriputta asks Mahā Koṭṭhita what can be said about an awakened one after death. From that unanswered exchange, the story moves backward through the canonical account of Siddhartha Gautama’s search: leaving home, studying with Āḷāra Kālāma and Uddaka Rāmaputta, rejecting extreme asceticism, awakening, hesitating to teach, and defining cessation as the fading and letting go of craving. The episode distinguishes nirvāṇa, the Sanskrit term, from nibbāna, the Pāli term, and separates liberation during life from final parinirvana at death. It follows early texts such as the Ariyapariyesana Sutta, Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta, Fire Sermon, Anurādha dialogue, Mahāparinibbāna Sutta, Udāna, and Itivuttaka, then traces later interpretation through Theravāda systematization, Nāgārjuna’s Madhyamaka, Buddha-nature literature, Chan and Zen reception, and modern translations. Competing models are treated fairly: nirvana as cessation of greed, hatred, delusion, craving, and rebirth; nirvana as the unconditioned or deathless; nirvana as a refusal to turn liberation into an object; and modern psychological readings. The final judgment remains with the listener.

YES OR NO: Does early Buddhist evidence define nirvana primarily as cessation of craving rather than an afterlife destination??????
