In this episode of All In. Always., we trace the evolution of American law enforcement—from colonial constables and night watches to the rise of municipal police departments, the political and reform eras, professionalization, radio-equipped patrol cars, specialized units, 911, community policing, and the technology and accountability that continue to shape the profession today. The professionalization movement introduced changes in training, personnel standards, organization, records, scientific investigation, and mobile patrol, while later community-policing approaches placed renewed emphasis on partnerships and problem-solving with the public.

This history also includes the difficult and contested parts of policing's past and the continuing tension between authority, public safety, accountability, and trust.

Because behind every badge is a person—and history can explain how the profession changed, but it can't tell us what it's actually like to wear one.
