At 91 years young, Dr. Mildred Dalton Henry is still daring to do the impossible and calling us higher. In this powerful conversation, she joins Coach SandyB on the Every.Black 90 Day Wins Entrepreneur of Excellence series to share a life story shaped by resilience, faith, and a relentless commitment to education and community.

Dr. Henry recounts how her family’s cotton gin and store in Tamo, Arkansas were burned down twice, including a fire set by the Klan, and how her mother literally protected the home with a gun on the table and a baby on her hip. Instead of giving up, her family turned devastation into determination, using education, hard work, and unity as their path forward.

She shares how she returned to college at 38 while raising five children, became a professor, wrote successful grants, built programs like Upward Bound, and helped found a charter school that has now served students for over 40 years.

The Dr. Mildred Dalton Henry Elementary School in San Bernardino, CA is named in her honor.

From her book, From the Ashes I Rise, Dare to Do the Impossible, to her mother’s mantra that “there is no such word as can’t,” Dr. Henry reminds us that there is always a way if you are willing to believe, prepare, and keep going.
