Elias:

Moving to Daleport City to work at the local fire station was going to be hard. Then I met Cade. Turns out, I’d met my new best friend, and for two years, he’s been by my side through everything. The guys tease us about how close we are, but we’re straight, just good friends. Then Cade and I found ourselves having to pretend to date, pretend to be attracted to one another…And then we stopped pretending.

Cade:

As if having a female stalker and a harpy for a mother wasn’t enough, I’m also in a fake relationship with my best friend? Then we ended up kissing…and more. Elias is straight, I’m straight, and we suddenly want to do not so straight things. That’s pretty much where I am now. So tell me… what am I supposed to do?

Elias and Cade, two straight firefighters and best friends, find themselves in a fake relationship that leads both men into territory they’ve never ventured into before. Can their friendship survive? Will they ever want to go back?

I already knew the book and I loved it. So obviously I had to buy the audiobook as well.
The narrator really did a great job. I loved his voice. So soothing.
Definitely worth listening.

Loved it!

Romeo Alexander’s recent books are usually solid 4–5 star reads for me, and I went into this one wanting exactly what it promised: a quick, easy, low-angst read. And to be fair—that’s what I got. Still, I couldn’t help wishing there had been more depth, more feeling, and more buildup to really let this story shine.

⸻

📖 Story

I genuinely liked the premise: Cade and Elias, two “straight” best friends who pretend to be boyfriends and slowly realize they want more. It’s a trope I adore, and the foundation was strong. Unfortunately, the execution felt rushed. I wanted more time with the characters just being together, more emotional tension, and more space for the relationship to naturally unfold.

Some elements didn’t quite work for me—Christine’s sudden 180 from full-on bitch to supportive friend felt completely random, and while Cade’s mother was appropriately frustrating, at least that storyline ended in a satisfying way. I also really would’ve loved to hear from Cade’s father and see his perspective on everything.

⸻

🧍‍♂️ Character Development

This is where the book fell a little flat for me. I liked Cade and Elias, but I don’t think they were given enough room to truly shine. At times, Elias felt far more invested in the relationship than Cade, which honestly made me a little sad. That imbalance lingered longer than I would’ve liked.

That said, we do get a HEA with an epilogue, which helped soften some of my frustrations—but I still wanted more after the happy ending to really see their relationship settle.

⸻

🔥 Spice

Because this is a short story, I expected the spice to hit sooner—and harder. Instead, it came late as there were long, overly descriptive passages about things that didn’t add much to the story (like detailed descriptions of the fire chief’s office), which slowed the pacing and delayed the payoff.

Less filler, more chemistry would’ve gone a long way here.

⸻

🎧 Narration

Keith Smith was a new narrator for me, and his performance was… fine. Not bad, not great. He reads very slowly, so I had to speed the audio up to 1.35x, and his long pauses between sentences were so pronounced that I genuinely thought my player had stopped at times. There was also no real distinction between character voices, which made dialogue blur together.

⸻

✍️ Editing & POV

The book could really benefit from better editing. There were noticeable grammatical errors and repetitive phrasing. I’m also not a fan of third-person POV when it leans heavily on repetitive tags like “Elias said,” “Elias thought,” “Elias grunted”—and unfortunately, this book does that a lot.

⸻

💭 Final Thoughts

This was a quick, easy read that delivered on comfort, but not on emotional depth. I enjoyed the idea of Cade and Elias more than the execution, and while I don’t regret reading it, I wanted more—more buildup, more feelings, more payoff. That said, this is also a recurring issue I personally have with Romeo Alexander’s books, as the endings feel always rushed and are too short, so your mileage may vary.

If you’re looking for something fast and low-effort, this might work. If you want emotional weight and character depth, it may fall a bit short.
