Über diesen Titel

Real heroes never die. But they do get grouchy in middle age. The beloved King Ik is dead, and there was barely time to check his pulse before the royal throne was supporting the suspiciously shapely backside of an impostor pretending to be Ik's beautiful, long-lost daughter. With the land's heroic hunks busy drooling all over themselves, there's only one man left who can save the kingdom of Jenair. His name is Dungar Loloth, a rural blacksmith turned innkeeper, a surly hermit, and an all-around nobody oozing toward middle age, compensating for a lack of height, looks, charm, and tact with guts and an attitude. Normally politics is the least of his concerns, but after everyone in the neighboring kingdom of Farrawee comes down with a severe case of being dead, Dungar learns that the masquerading princess not only is behind the carnage but also has similar plans for his own hometown. Together with the only person senseless enough to tag along, an eccentric and arguably insane hobo named Jimminy, he journeys out into the world he's so pointedly tried to avoid as the only hope of defeating the most powerful person in it. That is, if he can survive the pirates, cultists, radical Amazonians, and assorted other dangers lying in wait along the way. Logan J. Hunder's hilarious debut blows up the fantasy genre with its wry juxtaposition of the fantastic and the mundane, proving that the best and brightest heroes aren't always the best for the job.

Knights, wizards, gladiators and pirates combined with dark humour. The latter is carried over quite nicely, but the story could loose some settings like pirates or gladiators and stick more to the core.
All in all still rather fun and if you are just out for easy stories with quirky twists, this one could be enjoyed.

Nice one, but too many settings

Amusingly, this book parodies the genre so amazingly, it becomes a paragon for it.

Also, I do love it when characters have a bit of character development over the course of the story

Parody and Paragon at once

I admit I never heard of neither this story nor the author before and only checked it out as it was for free in the audible abo.
I was not disappointed though. The story had some interesting and a bit unusual characters and a few surprising twists including a good ending but not the usual "happy-end". Really worthwhile listening. Go for it.

Funny story. Worthwhile listening

Great fun, and well read and I'm looking forward to hearing more of the same!

Very funny

I mean it is what it is, it's satire, don't expect it to be too deep. But it is funny. In a way when you sometimes think "I probably shouldn't have laughed at that" but most of the times, the plot twists and jokes are rather unexpected and I was entertained the whole time. And it had some nice heart warming moments, too.

I did laugh out loud

I liked the easy going atmosphere and how things were seemingly without law in the world. Jokes were sometimes flat but they were part of its charm. Sometimes the stereotypes about women were a tad overdone which is sad because in the end there were at least three women with three different personalities. Thus the stereotypes appearing in the middle and even slightly in the beginning were unnecessary…
In the whole I’d say it is a pleasant diversion.

Kind of funny - sometimes to many stereotypes

I started and thought it was a charming and fun fairytale story about two heroes saving the kingdom with some very cheeky humour. And then there is the 3 chapters on the village where the sidekick‘s love interest lives: She happens to be the obese queen of a village of women only. This part is just filled to the brim with fatphobic comments, sexism, and „feminazi“ stereotypes. I really wanted to like the book but couldn’t push through that. What a shame.

Terry Pratchett meets Monty Python with a misogynist twist

The story is ok. Like a shirt that is ok for chilling alone in your room but not ok for opening the door or getting outside - lord protect.

I liked Jimminy, who Dungar always calls Jimmy, but than screams at a overweight, corrupt mayor about calling him Jimmy.
At least Jimminy has some personality, not just anger, Daddy and social issues like Dungar and probably the author (no disrespect).

This book has it all. Bad writing, badly used cliches, a bad case of inconsistencies and Gary Stu storytelling.
To compare this book with Monty Python or Terry Pratchett is to call a McDonald's crown worthy of a museum.

Call this book the drunken, drug fueled invention of Joe Rogan and Jordan Peterson after watching some 90s trash-fantasyfilm. And I don't want to talk about the blatend use of the autors prodigiousness about genders and feminists.
