Inhaltsangabe

John Dempsey, former Navy SEAL and Tier One operator, is back. Only a few months into his new life as an operative for Ember, the United States' most covert counterterrorism entity, he must stop an old nemesis who's resurfaced after ten years of operating in the shadows. From the deserts of Iraq, through the jungles of Guatemala, to the streets of suburbia, Dempsey and his Ember team race against time to stop a series of horrific and devious attacks against the homeland.

In this second installment of the Tier One series, John Dempsey faces his greatest challenge as he continues to evolve from a decorated Navy SEAL into the country's most lethal protector.

terrific series

This is book 2 of a terrific series, on par with Chris Ryan's Danny Black or Andy McNab's Nick Stone (which is very high praise). I'm halfway through the third part - so far I could not tell you a favorite, all books in the series are awesome.

While the novels have enough operational detail to be interesting and authentic, they don't clobber you with details like a Tom Clancy novel. The characters are well developed and while (thankfully!) there is no love plot as of yet, you find yourself caring for the individuals you get to know over the course of the narratives. The unit includes one woman but, so far, she has been cool.

The narrator does a fantastic job! He gives each character an individual voice, even the villains of different countries in the Middle East.

One final thought: the novels IMHO can be read as stand-alone stories, each gives you enough background if you're new to the series but not so much as to bore you if you're not. Yet you might want to read them in sequence anyway because the story and evolution of JD (and of Ember) is a story arch that spans the entire series.
