January '42. LA reels behind the shock of Pearl Harbor. Local Japanese are rounded up and slammed behind bars. Massive thunderstorms hit the city. A body is unearthed in Griffith Park.

The cops tag it as a routine dead-man job. They’re wrong. It’s an early warning signal of chaos.

There’s a murderous fire and a gold heist. There’s Fifth Column treason on American soil. There are homegrown Nazis, commies and race racketeers. There’s two dead cops in a dive off the jazz-club strip. And three men and one woman have a hot date with history.

once again a kaleidoscope of seemingly connected plot lines with seemingly conected and very toxic members and associates of the police force, crossing each others paths, barking and killing each other when needed. Once an other of Ellroy's plots full of racism and corruption, and once again one begins to wonder where this is leading. I mean if every policeman/woman is a racist, a killer and currupt, why should anyone senserely bother to solve a crime everyone seems to know about , but is dwarfed when compared to the other piles of bodies all those dirty cops leave behind? I for my part, don't. I only savour the savagery of the time Ellroy's describing but have enough of it beforw the story ends.
