What would you do if the bible was law, and you didn't fit in?
My name is Catianna Breaker. I live in a community that lives by the word of the Lord, and unquestioningly obeys the laws of the Bible. My father was a Gatekeeper, a soldier of God who enforces these laws and dispenses justice as our Prophet sees fit. I'm a painter, and an average student. I help my Aunt Shelly run a pottery store after school. I'm sixteen years old, and I'm dying.
When you're sixteen, nothing could possibly happen to you. Things happen to friends of friends, to relatives or complete strangers, but not to you. Strip that away, and you lose something inside of you. It's the spark of youth that adults often refer to in reminiscence, something that makes every young boy and girl take daring risks, makes them happy-go-lucky and carefree. What you lose is your invincibility.
So who am I now? What do I believe in when what I see and hear around me leads to suffering? What path do I follow when the rules I'd clung to for safety seem to turn their fangs on me in my hour of need? This is my story. These are my words. Please, listen, because this will be my only chance.
