Über diesen Titel

The sequel to A. K. Larkwood's stunning debut fantasy, The Unspoken Name. The Thousand Eyes continues the Serpent Gates series - perfect for fans of Jenn Lyons, Joe Abercrombie, and Ursula K. Le Guin.

Just when they thought they were out...

Two years after defying the wizard Belthandros Sethennai and escaping into the great unknown, Csorwe and Shuthmili have made a new life for themselves, hunting for secrets among the ruins of an ancient snake empire.

Along for the ride is Tal Charossa, determined to leave the humiliation and heartbreak of his hometown far behind him, even if it means enduring the company of his old rival and her insufferable girlfriend.

All three of them would be quite happy never to see Sethennai again. But when a routine expedition goes off the rails and a terrifying imperial relic awakens, they find that a common enemy may be all it takes to bring them back into his orbit.

"I cannot recommend this series enough." (Tamsyn Muir, New York Times best-selling author of Gideon the Ninth)

Sadly they chose - for whatever reason I cannot fathom - to change narrators. Quite a mistake since this narrator is just not very good. She only can do one voice - her own - which makes it hard to follow who says what. She is also very monotone and has trouble with the (place) names. This took me out of the story every time.

If you have listened to the first book you’ll know that the narrator took into account varied accents and gave everyone a unique voice, sadly with this new narrator that’s not the case anymore. The worst offences - for me - are Tal and Csorwe. You cannot even distinquish the two. Shuthmili is only vaguely recognisable due to her “American” accent but her the fire and humour are gone. That goes for the entire book. Since the narrator reads everything like a toaster manual it’s very tiring and boring to listen to her. I have decided to read the book myself instead.

The story itself is good but feels rushed. I somehow thought there would be three books but apparently that’s not the case which makes it even worse. There are several time jumps in the book which makes it really incohesive somehow. Yes, there were some time jumps innthe first book but they just fit better.

Whereas it felt the focus of the first book was on character and plot here it feels like the author wanted to bring as much “action” in as possible. I personally didn’t care for the way she did it, since, as I mentioned, the overall story felt more like an unfininshed tv show that should have had more than 8 episodes.

I liked the first book very much and looked forward to this one but sadly it was all in all quite disappointing.

Disappointing Narration
