Über diesen Titel

The science of information is the most influential, yet perhaps least appreciated field in science today. Never before in history have we been able to acquire, record, communicate, and use information in so many different forms. This revolution goes far beyond the limitless content that fills our lives, because information also underlies our understanding of ourselves, the natural world, and the universe. Little wonder that an entirely new science has arisen that is devoted to deepening our understanding of information and our ability to use it.

The study and acquisition of information has been around a long time. In human terms, spoken language, writing, art, music, and mathematics are perfect examples; so are Morse code, Mendelian genetics, and radio signals - all understood and used before 1900. But a series of conceptual breakthroughs in the 20th century united what seemed like unrelated phenomena and led to a dramatic new way of looking at reality. Called information theory, this field has been responsible for path-breaking insights.

The Science of Information: From Language to Black Holes covers the exciting concepts, history, and applications of information theory in 24 challenging and eye-opening half-hour lectures taught by Professor Benjamin Schumacher of Kenyon College. A prominent physicist and award-winning educator at one of the nation’s top liberal arts colleges, Professor Schumacher is also a pioneer in the field of quantum information, which is the latest exciting development in this dynamic scientific field.

This book makes a great attempt in communicating the basics of information theory in a regor-free but comprehensive manner. The narrator is very enthusiastic and articulate. A minor issue is the continuous reference to the auxiliary written material accompanying this audio book, which might be tiresome at times but can be omitted for a more experienced listener.

A celebration of the information era

is a great explanation about the basic concepts of information reviewing ist characteristics from the physical area till biology DNA, knowledge and brain, archeology, etc
Although it is intend to be for everyone the themes are analyze in a mathematical way that demands basic university knowledge level to understand them. And some time detailed reviews in Google or YouTube.

Great general view of information theory

Most interesting topic - most unsuitable for audible. I‘m not afraid of mathematical content, but I wish there had been a warning before my purchase. The pdf helped somewhat, but this really ought to be a textbook rather than for listening...

It started well, but then took a deep dive into physics then aliens. I can't say I'd recommend this to a student who is trying to learn about information theory.

sort of about information science

These are intended to be video lectures. yes, there's a PDF, but it's not the same as watching the video. Also, the complexity level is off the rails. I'm an electrical engineer and I had studied many of the concepts in University. those lectures I could follow with no problem. But any lecture on a subject where I wasn't already an expert on, was mind boggling.

Not really suited for audio only
