Über diesen Titel

We bear witness to loneliness, free-floating anxiety, and fear giving way to censorship, loss of privacy, and surrendered freedoms. It is all spurred by a singular, focused crisis narrative that forbids dissident views and relies on destructive groupthink.

Totalitarianism is not a coincidence and does not form in a vacuum. It arises from a collective psychosis that has followed a predictable script throughout history, its formation gaining strength and speed with each generation—from the Jacobins to the Nazis and Stalinists—as technology advances. Governments, mass media, and other mechanized forces use fear, loneliness, and isolation to demoralize populations and exert control, persuading large groups of people to act against their own interests, always with destructive results.

In The Psychology of Totalitarianism, world-renowned Professor of Clinical Psychology Mattias Desmet deconstructs the societal conditions that allow this collective psychosis to take hold. By looking at our current situation and identifying the phenomenon of “mass formation”—a type of collective hypnosis—he clearly illustrates how close we are to surrendering to totalitarian regimes.

Prof. Desmet touches my heart. I see myself completely in his story. Every rational man today has probably suffered under the experience that his ratiosinations and those of others lack something fundamental. They lack the fundamental ability to empathically relate to the secret of another human's life. You cannot know the other fully by breaking them into features and describing all the interactiony of those features. There is something dead about this approach and makes genuine knowing impossible.

This I see reflected in my clinical practice time and time again. Patients are most happy, and I aswell, when there is a genuine resonance between us, a deep respect and understanding of the mystery of the life of my patient and our relationship.

In this way, you get to know the other person better than if you'd do a million scans and tests.

There is nothing more powerful than seeing with your own eyes the power that a little respectful and good hearted attention can have on the well being of your patient.

Amazing Book every Doctor should read.

During the decline of the West the Covid crisis will not be the last episode of mass formation and psychosis. Desmet clearly describes how the phenomenon played out in history before and during the pandemic. His analysis is put into context with the history of rational thought and science. I believe this book is an equally important lesson on social psychology as Le Bon's Psychology of the Masses

Desmet is a brilliant and couragous intellectual

During the C times, Desmet was an important find to me. His ideas around mass formation took the sting out off many encounters and confirmations. The book goes beyond the few podcasts I previously listened to. The narrator is a professional, but since he is not the author, it's a bit stale overall for lack of enthusiasm or emphasis.

More than I expected. And I expected a lot.

this book is more upsetting than any horror-thriller could ever be. Gift it to somebody you like to talk about it.
