There is nothing unusual or remarkable about the Swart family, oh no, they resemble the family from the next farm and the one beyond that, just an ordinary bunch of white South Africans, and if you don't believe it then listen to us speak ...

The many voices of The Promise tell a story in four snapshots, each one centered on a family funeral, each one happening in a different decade. In the background, a different president is in power, and a different spirit hangs over the country, while in the foreground the family fights over what they call their farm, on a worthless piece of land outside Pretoria.

Over large jumps in time, people get older, faces and laws and lives all change, while a brother and sister circle around a promise made long ago, and never kept ...

Brilliant... Rarely have I had such a strong sense, while reading a novel, that I myself was there, in the room with the characters

This book is a story about the complicated human condition — that is, how to live a fulfilled life. It’s well worth diving into and being taken on a cinematic narrative journey by a wonderful storyteller.

How can I so enjoy a book about such an awful family? The Swarts live on a farm near Pretoria, South Africa and on her deathbed the matriarch Rachael promises her faithful maid Salome that she will inherit the modest farm house in which she lives. Her teenage daughter Amor is witness to her father agreeing to honour this promise. But he then denies it.
The story is told through 4 funerals of family members who are all deeply flawed. We see them age, wither and not learn from their mistakes while in the background South Africa is changing - from apartheid to Mandela & hope to Zuma & corruption - and then what?
Amor raises the promise at each funeral and is dismissed.
I was as fascinated both by the story and also by the narrative style. I am in awe of the author who artfully switched narrator multiple times (even within the same sentence!) - he compared it to a camera flicking between protagonists and viewpoints. A very original book and truly worthy of its Booker prize in 2021!
(I highly recommend the audiobook brought to life by Peter Noble’s narration, which also included a very inspiring author interview).

Raw and original, super narration!
