Über diesen Titel
The Plague Charmer, by Karen Maitland, author of the much-loved Company of Liars - her first novel of the plague - will chill and delight fans of Kate Mosse and C. J. Sansom in equal measure.
Riddle me this: I have a price, but it cannot be paid in gold or silver.
Porlock Weir, Exmoor, 1361. Thirteen years after the Great Pestilence, plague strikes England for the second time. Sara, a packhorse man's wife, remembers the horror all too well and fears for the safety of her children. Only a dark-haired stranger offers help but at a price that no one will pay.
Fear gives way to hysteria in the village, and when the sickness spreads to her family, Sara finds herself locked away by neighbours she has trusted for years. And as her husband - and then others - begin to die, the cost no longer seems so unthinkable.
The price that I ask from one willing to pay...a human life.

Once again Ms. Maitland manages to weave an intoxicating mix of historical fiction, magic, and folk horror. This time the story centers around an English seaside village dealing with the second outbreak of the Black Death plague. Perspective shifts between a dozen or so characters in the first person, which I will admit took a little time to get used to, but the characters are all so wonderfully fleshed out and convincing that I soon stopped noticing the unusual literary style. The story is excellent, but be prepared for a tale of horror and tragedy.
Like all of her books, Maitland's stories are not for the faint-of-heart.
The one slight downside to this experience was with the narration. While Mr. Keeble does an excellent job throughout, there is one female character which he choose to give a most irritating, nasal whine. This grated every time she spoke or the book switched to her perspective. Thankfully, her first-person sections were not too frequent, though she was a frequent character so she is heard often. If I could give a half-star reduction, I would just for this voice, but as her first-person sections weren't more frequent, I don't think enough to dock a full star.
In the end, I was gripped by the story and managed to listen to it in about 4 sittings over the course of 3 days. Highly, highly recommended!
My favourite Karen Maitland novel yet
