‘Classic Lynda, a fabulous read’ MARTINA COLE

‘Lynda La Plante practically invented the thriller’ KARIN SLAUGHTER

From the creator of the award-winning ITV series Prime Suspect, starring Helen Mirren, comes the fascinating back story of the iconic DCI Jane Tennison.

In 1973 Jane Tennison, aged 22, leaves the Metropolitan Police Training Academy to be placed on probationary exercise in Hackney where criminality thrives.

We witness her struggle to cope in a male-dominated, chauvinistic environment, learning fast to deal with shocking situations with no help or sympathy from her superiors.

Then comes her involvement in her first murder case.

Absolutely loved Lynda La Plante’s storytelling and the brilliant characters she brings to life. Jane Tennison is always compelling—but her younger self took me a little by surprise.

In these early years, she is portrayed as a sensitive, empathetic, quietly introverted “girl’s girl” who tries not to upset anyone. That feels quite far removed from the formidable, unapologetic, occasionally whisky-powered DCI Tennison we know from *Prime Suspect*.

Of course, years in policing can change anyone, & perhaps that is exactly the point—but I found it hard at times to picture this very gentle young woman becoming the Jane Tennison we later know. Still, it’s an engaging listen & I’m invested enough to keep following her journey.
