Darkness chased him his whole life. Now, he sees it as his only guide.

Colter Cain, tormented by unknown adversaries, stumbles into a life he never expected. Dovelets Academy of the Astrological Arts, a hidden haven for practitioners of the astrological order, reveals a shocking truth: Colter is destined to wield dark magic with powers unlike any other–the power to grant immortality.

But the light of revelation casts a long shadow. Dovelets has a troubled past with dark magic, and Colter's abilities are viewed with both selfish intrigue and general suspicion. Meanwhile, whispers of Dovelets biggest adversary–the Fellowship of Dark Arts–reach Colter's ears. The Fellowship seeks to control the power he possesses, and they won't hesitate to claim it, by force if necessary.

Thrown into a world of intrigue and danger, Colter must navigate a treacherous path. Who can he trust? Who is friend, and who is foe? As he discovers the beauty in embracing the darkest parts of life, new questions arise: How will Colter protect himself? As his powers develop, will he be capable of saving the reputation of Scorpio practitioners at Dovelets?

Join Colter on a thrilling journey of self-discovery in Scorpio Rising, the explosive first book of Anthony Scott’s Age of Cain Saga—A Dovelets Story.

I did like the premise of this academia-based magical story, sort of like Harry Potter - an orphaned boy followed by unfortunate events ends un in an academy that teaches magic, and discovers he has quite unique abilities. It is advertised as an LGBT novel, and ok, there are gay characters in it, but I didn't think it was the main focus of the book. I found the story interesting and was curious about what happens next, in general. The world building was nice. I appreciate that the author thought through the magic rules and its system and even put it into international context. This has potential. However the writing was very choppy. Some scenes were depicted with great nuance, while many others were so fragmented that they felt like bullet points that the author had quickly jolted down in order to return to them later and write them out properly. The dialogues are pretty weak. The style and vocabulary are inconsistent. We keep on jumping between what is happening in the head of this or that person, and what is said, and what it would turn out to be. It is a bit confusing because of how it is described. I just hope that the author develops a more mature voice in the next books in the series.

an interesting plot, unremarkable writing
