When floods cut off the ground paths of Rainshadow Forest, the inventive Sunvine monkey troop builds a network of bridges across the canopy. The bridges save lives and transform travel, trade, and communication. But as the network expands, tolls exclude poor animals, deer lose influence, vines are overharvested, birds lose quiet nesting space, and young monkeys forget how to travel on the ground. Through one continuous story, Maro, Lira, ambitious Tavi, observant Nima, and Grandmother Suri work with deer, foxes, tortoises, owls, squirrels, beavers, boars, bats, birds, and many other creatures. The fable explores invention, access, dependency, maintenance, shared knowledge, living limits, and the hidden costs of convenience.
