When your life story includes being physically, emotionally, and sexually abused; when rape is something you were taught was your fault; when you are led to believe that suicide is an option; when you are raised in a home where God didn’t exist…it’s easy to understand why you would have no expectations of God. But what about later, when you learned about and thought you knew God? When you were going to church and doing all the “right” things? What about when you were crying out in desperation because you wanted to believe, and He still didn’t answer?

Then what? Simple. You walk away and spiral into a dark season of bad decisions. At least, that’s what I did, and I would come to deeply regret it. God’s forgiveness came swiftly when I repented, but forgiving myself? That took time.
