Über diesen Titel

The stakes have never been higher. Shelby must save the man she loves… or die trying.

A simple search-and-rescue mission sends Shelby into the woods, where she stumbles on a long-dead secret. Add a spur-of-the-moment trip to San Francisco that goes horribly wrong, and Shelby is in a race against time. Good thing she’s got friends who are willing to help, but even that may not be enough to save the man she loves. In a game of secrets and shadows, Shelby must trust her instincts, or lose everything.

USA TODAY and Wall Street Journal Bestselling author Colleen Helme offers a clever mix of mystery, laugh-out-loud humor, and captivating adventure in the highly acclaimed Shelby Nichols Adventure Series.

Perfect for fans of Dawn Merriman, Amanda M Lee, Wendy Wang, and Lily Harper Hart.

The beginning of the book is as we know it. Something ordinary happens and chaos ensues. When Shelby goes back to get her jacket, what happens? More chaos and the destruction of a crime scene of course. Then Shelby and Chris unexpectedly go to San Francisco and a Shelby clone replaces Shelby as we know her. This clone doesn't know how to make decisions, this clone doesn't know how to react in difficult situations especially without thinking about it or without help. She seems to be fearful not to say timid and cautious (Shelby cautious? Yeah right). But she knows how to make a plan and then... wait and see. And plan again. And wait and see once more.

I don't want to spoil that's why I'm being so vague, but I find the whole situation is not tangible and not believable and that is saying something, because you know, Shelby Nichols tramples, stumbles and above all rushes from one unbelievable situation to the next. I had trouble not zoning out during the long-winded not to say boring action in San Francisco even when narrator Wendy Tremont King did a very good job as usual (only with 1.1x speed, otherwise I can't listen to it, funny isn't it?). The story in San Francisco is just so not connected or important to the rest. In fact for me it feels like it's inserted to - I don't know fill up space? I get that the situation was perhabs more frightening than usual, but Shelby could still swoon over Ramos and be excited to ride a bike (she had to be in this clone somewhere, but then I bet she would have kicked its ass). Oh and she could buy some souvenirs while contemplating the situation and doing a little more waiting. And when the situation was solved, it was like all's well that ends well. I'm glad you're back and not hurt (that was the least credible as far as I'm concerned). Does anyone want a box of chocolate or two? So it was not that Shelby was excessively anxious or some such, she was just normal *shudder* After their return home the story and the case there continued as if nothing had happened.

I'm not talking about the plot holes and the missed opportunities here, because I would have to spoil and I don't want that, but I contemplated to not finish this book during the episode in San Francisco. I could only hold strong because I adore Shelby and her shenanigans. I just hope it didn't lose its magic, but I'm not sure if I will continue this series.

Who is this person pretending to be Shelby?
