Inhaltsangabe

Brought to you by Penguin.

A pure pleasure of a novel set in Georgian London where the discovery of a mysterious ancient Greek vase sets in motion conspiracies, revelations and romance.

There is a fine line between coincidence and fate....

In London 1799, Dora Blake is an aspiring jewellery artist who lives with her uncle in what used to be her parents' famed shop of antiquities. When a mysterious Greek vase is delivered, Dora is intrigued by her uncle's suspicious behaviour and enlists the help of Edward Lawrence, a young man seeking acceptance into the Society of Antiquaries. Edward sees the ancient vase as key to unlocking his academic future. Dora sees it as her chance to restore her parents' shop to its former glory and to escape her uncle.

But what Edward discovers about the vase has Dora questioning everything she has ever known, about her life, her family and the world as she knows it. As Dora uncovers the truth she starts to realise that some mysteries are buried and some boxes are locked, for a reason.

Gorgeously atmospheric and deliciously unpauseable, Pandora deals with themes of secrets and deception, love and fulfilment, fate and hope.

Kritikerstimmen

"Olivia Vinall, who was delightful as DS Matilda Stone in Queens of Mystery, maintains a running current of excitement and copes effortlessly with the challenge of a cast ranging from grandes dames to Cornish seamen." (The Sunday Times)

That was something…

The story and idea are quite interesting and intriguing, but the execution leaks a bit of fine tuning. I recon the book was a recent and also the authors First publish (for as much as i know) and I really hope she keeps working on her writing and brings us new books in the future for i find her ideas behind the book really good. It’s only the technique of writing an story telling that I find tops me from really enjoying the book. The Charakters have depth and interesting personality trades, there was thought out into desires struggles, personal development etc. But nothing is really worked out to its full potential. They never really overcome their personal borders and if they do it seems confusing how they came to change their minds all of the sudden, for there was no real reason to change their opinion so drastically in just a blink of an eye. All places, no matter their importance to the story are introduced shortly and without much detail, the side Charakters are restricted to what is necessary to the storyline and, all over all, every aspect of world building and Charakter development feels rushed and expedient. The scenes change to quickly and the form of narrating makes it really hard to keep up with what’s going on. Sometimes when there are conversations between multiple important people i couldn’t distinguish who is talking and thinking what because it is not clearly stated and the narrator switches perspective from one sentence to another. It might have done the book good to have whole chapters clearly assumed to one person like in many recent YA and Fantasy novels. Overall I enjoyed the Ideas behind the book and hope to see more of the authors creative mind in the future. Every beginning is hard and I really see great potential lying here, so I would still encourage everyone who is intrigued by the blurb and wants a nice historical kind of romance, kind of detective story with Greek mythology aspects, to read the book and see for themself how they enjoy it.
