‘A book for anyone who finds it difficult to believe in a better future’ THE TIMES
Feeling anxious, powerless, or confused about the future of our planet? This book will transform how you see our biggest environmental problems -- and how we can solve them.
A STYLIST BEST NON-FICTION 2024 * A GUARDIAN BIGGEST FICTION AND NON-FICTION FOR 2024 * A WATERSTONES ‘BOOK YOU NEED TO READ IN 2024’ * A GUARDIAN ‘FIVE GREAT READS’
We are bombarded by doomsday headlines that tell us the soil won't be able to support crops, fish will vanish from our oceans, that we should reconsider having children.
But in this bold, radically hopeful book, data scientist Hannah Ritchie argues that if we zoom out, a very different picture emerges. The data shows we've made so much progress on these problems, and so fast, that we could be on track to achieve true sustainability for the first time in history.
Packed with the latest research, practical guidance and enlightening graphics, this book will make you rethink almost everything you've been told about the environment, from the virtues of eating locally and living in the countryside, to the evils of overpopulation, plastic straws and palm oil. It will give you the tools to understand what works, what doesn't and what we urgently need to focus on so we can leave a sustainable planet for future generations.
These problems are big. But they are solvable. We are not doomed. We can build a better future for everyone. Let's turn that opportunity into reality.

Most of the time, books read by the author instead of a professional reader are not to my liking. This is an exception, it is really well read. As a non-native speaker the Scottish accent was at first a bit challenging, but I got used to it and really enjoyed after a while.
Very interesting book

Hannah Ritchie is not only spreading general optimism. Her views are based on extensive data. Her understanding and approach is nuanced. She is including aspects you might not have thought of. She is taking a close look, far into the past if needed. Her conclusions are specific and tangible.
The audio book is read by herself. Listening to her you'll notice her authenticity quickly. I have felt a deep passion for meaningfulness and truth.
I also liked her scottish accent - a slight surprise at the beginning, but I got used to it quickly.
From my point of view this book should be used at schools worldwide, as source of information and - at least equally important - as teaching material on the subject 'nuanced thinking'. The opposite of social media.
Important Book

Well, this one would be on my must read list - if I had to give my past self one of those - and maybe on my future list as well... Why? Well it blows me out of my preconceptions about what the world looks like into what the world probably more accurately looks like.
It is a bit like a Hans Rosling‘s Factullness part 2, but this time about the environment rather than development (even though that plays a part too). The idea is to update one’s beliefs about the world given the data and evidence we have and not the other way around.
This book gave many new relevant facts that surprised me, but I probably shouldn’t butcher them here.
What I will say is that it did give me a lot and I hope if has taught me a bit about how the world looks like and what questions to ask/data to look for when forming new or questioning old opinions about the world.
A new favorite book
