Liberal democracies are on the retreat both internally as well as through external pressure and teaming up by autocrats. Anna Appelbaum offers a sharp analysis of the situation, a call for waking up out of our complacency particularly in Europe.

I found Anne Applebaum's thesis and framing to be compelling. Her narration was also excellent - unusually so for an author narrating their own book. The only disappointment was that the outlook is grim. I do think that this is realistic, so it's important to portray accurately, as the author has done. However she did promise in the intro that she would finish with a guide to how liberal democraties could win against the threat of Autocracy, Inc. Sadly, in truth, the end of book only offered the flimsiest, most self-delusional pretense of this. The measures she proposes have already been shown to not work, or not be enough. I hope that we the free world will come up with better ideas, that work, before it's too late.

…und gibt sehr gute Einsichten zum weltweiten Agieren von Autokratien und deren Versuchen zur Beeinflussung. Und führt einem mal wieder den Wert vor Augen, in einer liberalen Demokratie zu leben.

Anne Applebaum connects the dots in such an eloquent and elegant way! The book outlines in a simple yet powerful way how autocrats connect, work from the same playbook and… are on the rise. But she shows as well examples on how to work against this.. a must read for people who love democracy
