Über diesen Titel

Safely away from the chaos of Manhattan, St. Thomas, a small college on the banks of the Hudson River in the Bronx, is supposed to be tranquil, bucolic, and serene. Unfortunately, English professor Alison Bergeron has found it to be anything but. Recently divorced from a fellow professor and even more recently without a car - it was stolen - she has been hoofing it to school. One Friday evening, two NYPD homicide detectives drop by her office. The good news is that they found her beat-up Volvo; the bad news is that the body of one of the students in her Shakespeare seminar was in the trunk.

Not only are Alison's chances of getting the car back bleak, but suddenly she's the primary suspect on a list that includes, among others, the murdered student's drug-dealing boyfriend, Vince, and the girl's father's business rivals (he's head of an old Italian family . . .).

Accused of a crime that she didn't commit, Alison enlists her best friend Max's emotional support and services as an amateur sleuth. Their fumbling efforts to clear Alison's name could land her in even hotter water with Detective Bobby Crawford, the handsome investigating officer (and former altar boy) - not to mention the nuns at St. Thomas….

Maggie Barbieri's charming professor and down-to-earth detective make an unlikely but lovable team in her delightful debut mystery.

Beschreibung von Audible

Lively and endlessly entertaining, full of mysterious twists and turns, Maggie Barbieri's Murder 101 plunges listeners into a great story from the first sentence. Gayle Hendrix performs the story of Alison Bergeron, professor at the idyllic college on the Hudson River, St. Thomas. After finalizing her divorce and having her car stolen, detectives tell her that her car's been found complete with the body of a student in the trunk. Funnier than expected, dramatic and romantic, this is a mystery that listeners will keep coming back to.

Good Storyline

If you are into listening your chronically cranky drunk Catholic aunt gossiping about the neighborhood, this is for you!

Story so-so, narrator: Annoying

I personally really enjoyed the performance of the narrator. For me she is a perfect fit. I listened already to all the books and I love them.

Love the stories and the narrator

Storyline ok, heroine not likeable enough for me: Catholic mindset and overt lusting for a man plus constant crying all at the same time does not work for me.

you need to like the protagonist

Die Geschichte war ganz nett, aber wegen der Sprecherin wollte ich eigentlich alle paar Minuten abbrechen.

Sprecherin kaum auszuhalten

It took me while to get over the accent of the speaker, which I find rather unpleasant. But once the story picks up momentum, I got over that. It's an unexpected climax when the crime is solved, which keeps you hooked till the end.

Gripping storyline.

- [x] I couldn’t appreciate the story, because the narrator speaks almost permanently in a high-pitched voice which isn’t very pleasant to the ear and it was hard for me as a listener to distinguish who is speaking, because she doesn’t stay consistent . Therefore I won’t listen to the other books in this series, although the first one was not bad.

I did not enjoy the narrator

The story itself was mildly entertaining - even though extremely unrealistic when it comes to representing the world of academia or police work. I also found the pace quite slow at times (long descriptions of how the protagonist is either hungry or tired - or crying - instead of drawing obvious conclusions) - after all, it is probably quite telling that it didn't bother me to stop listening while the murderer was stabbing one of the main characters. (What did bother me was the author's obvious ignorance of the past perfect, made even worse by the fact that the narrator is supposed to be an English professor.)
And talking about the narrator: the person who reads the whole thing is terribly miscast. The protagonist is supposed to be a clever college professor in her 30s - yet she sounds like a dumb housewife in her 60s who has never finished high school and doesn't even know how to pronounce Tiramisu (and other foreign terms).

Grade A it is not...
