An asteroid is hurtling toward Earth. A big, bad one. Maybe not kill-all-the-dinosaurs bad but at least kill-everyone-in-California-and-wipe-out-Japan-with-a-tsunami bad.

Yuri, a physicist prodigy from Russia, has been recruited to aid NASA as they calculate a plan to avoid disaster. The good news is Yuri knows how to stop the asteroid - his research in antimatter will probably win him a Nobel Prize if there's ever another Nobel Prize awarded.

But the trouble is, even though NASA asked for his help, no one there will listen to him. He's 17, and they've been studying physics longer than he's been alive. Then he meets (pretty, wild, unpredictable) Dovie, who lives like a normal teenager, oblivious to the impending doom. Being with her, on the adventures she plans when he's not at NASA, Yuri catches a glimpse of what it means to save the world and live a life worth saving.

Prepare to laugh, cry, cringe, and have your mind burst open with the questions of the universe.

Zuerst: Ich tue mich schwer mit Hörbüchern und es ist das erste, das ich wirklich zu Ende gehört habe. Und jederzeit nochmal hören würde und werde. Der Sprecher Aaron Landon kann mit feinen Nuancen jede Figur herausarbeiten und zum Leben erwecken. Man sieht die Charaktere förmlich vor sich. Die Geschichte erinnert an Tschick, den "Fänger im Roggen" und ähnliche "Adoleszenzromane", wie es so schön heißt. Aber hier gerät die Figur in einen Spagat zwischen überlebensnotwendiger Anpassung an Gesellschaft und die Großmacht USA und einer nachgeholten Pubertät, die genau in die Phase einer Weltrettungsaktion fällt, für deren Gelingen die pubertierenden Qualitäten der Hauptfigur Juri sozusagen Bedingung sind. Wunderbar der Humor der Autorin, die die amerikanische Gesellschaft und den politischen Machtapparat immer wieder mit feiner Ironie durch die Brille des jungen russischen Wissenschaftlers spiegelt.
Ein schönes Hörerlebnis, eine gute Geschichte und nur schade, dass es sie noch nicht auf Deutsch zur weiteren Verbreitung gibt.

It is a lovely book and Katie Kennedy managed to charm me in spite of all the misgivings, I had initially. The story cannot be taken too seriously, it is rather harmless and unrealistic and probably targeted at young adults, but is nicely told and Katie Kennedy really knows how to create enchanting and endearing characters. It really is a “feel good” story and that helps to overlook all the clichés presented in the narrative. At times, I was afraid that Yuri, the young Russian and Dovie with her hippy parents would turn into cartoon characters, but somehow the author managed to avoid this trap.

Learning to Swear in America is not a nail biting thriller, even though it is full of action and events. The story is quite funny at times, but most of all I perceived it as a story of coming of age, first love, purpose and meaning of life and maybe even the essence of being human.

Briefly summarized, the plot is as follows. An asteroid threatens to destroy the earth or at least most of California. There are just a couple of days left and all the leading scientists are clueless, how to stop it. Luckily, there is Yuri, a 17 year old Russian physicist, who could help with his ground breaking research on antimatter, but the eggheads at NASA distrust his approach. In the pending doom and the disaster just days away, Yuri meets Dovie and his eyes are opened to a completely different world apart from physics and math. He starts to understand, why it is so important to save the world.

Perhaps the story is a little bit corny, but it is a pleasure to read it.
