During the 12th century, Islamic leaders of Syria and Palestine fought for a long time to extinguish Christian reigns that were founded immediately after the first crusade. They were only partially successful in 1187 under the Kurdish leader Saladin. Jerusalem returned into Islamic hands, but the idea of the crusades was far from extinction, as the heroic deeds of Richard I , the Lion Heart, proved. This is an intricate and complex story with repercussions still echoing around the world today.
L'appello del novembre 1095 lanciato da papa Urbano II a Clermont avrebbe segnato la storia dell'Europa medievale lanciandola alla riconquista di Gerusalemme e del Santo Sepolcro da secoli sotto il controllo musulmano. Nel corso del XII secolo i potentati islamici dell'area siro-palestinese avrebbero a lungo lottato per cancellare i regni cristiani sorti all'indomani della prima crociata riuscendovi, almeno in parte, nel 1187 sotto la guida del condottiero curdo Saladino. Gerusalemme ritornò in mano islamica; ma l'idea di crociata si rivelò ben lontana dall'estinzione come le gesta di Riccardo I Cuor di Leone avrebbero dimostrato. Una storia intricata e complessa le cui ripercussioni si riverberano ancora nel mondo odierno.
