a quiet, highly interesting semi autobiographical view of British Victorian rural life in Oxfordshire in the 1880s and 90s. not a novel, just a collection of memories of people, places and customs. if you want an intricate story, this is not for you, if you want colourful lives, a quiet account of landscape and humanscape in an era that is long gone, this is very much for you. beautifully written, lovely language, sharply observant. i could not put it down.
