Whip King cannot be the man for me.

Cocky, pierced firefighters are perfect for late-night rom-coms, but in real life they’re nothing but trouble. Especially when you find out they work for your dad—after you’ve already slept with them.

Moving to my parents’ small town was supposed to be the fresh start I was looking for. When a disastrous Valentine’s Day leads to an unexpected encounter with a sexy stranger, and ends with the hottest night of my life, I didn’t think I would ever see Whip again.

Imagine my surprise when one of my sixth-grade students has a medical emergency and it’s Whip who shows up, looking hot as hell, to save the day. I should be embarrassed at how we left things, but instead I’m furious he doesn’t seem to remember me.

So I scrape my pride off the floor, lift my chin, and pretend there’s nothing between us. But that can last only so long. Stolen glances melt into forbidden touches, and once we give in to temptation, we can’t keep our hands off each other.

Nothing has ever felt so right, but my guarded heart won’t let me believe in happily ever after with a man like him. Opening up to Whip may be the hardest thing I’ve ever done, and every time we agree to one last time, we both know it’s a lie.

How many times can we keep telling ourselves just this once before we realize that, when it comes to love, once is never enough?

Whip, the cocky, sexy firefighter, was such a great character — layered, likable from the very start, and impossible not to root for. He fell fast and hard for Emily, the new townie, the fire chief’s daughter, and the hot, witty new school teacher. Their chemistry and banter were on point — funny, flirty, and genuinely sweet.

So why only 3 stars?

✨ Emily’s behavior didn’t always make sense. She ghosted Whip, called him a jerk simply because he was working with her dad and technically “off-limits,” and then suddenly flipped to wanting a friends-with-benefits arrangement. Her reasoning felt thin, and it made her come off inconsistent.

✨ Loose ends. We never found out what happened to Whip’s mother, and his father — who was frankly awful — faced zero consequences. I’m guessing these are setups for future books in the series, but it left this one feeling unfinished.

✨ The first night fade-to-black. The big moment between Whip and Emily wasn’t described in the book — instead, it was tossed into a bonus chapter after the ending. Honestly? That was a little frustrating.

🎧 Narration: Aiden Snow? Absolute perfection — that deep, sexy, manly voice fit Whip like a glove. Samantha Summers was great for Emily, but her male voice made Whip sound like a completely different guy — flat, emotionless, almost introverted — which clashed with Aiden’s vibrant take on the same character.

👉 Bottom line: Fun, flirty small-town romance with amazing banter, but some plot choices and missing pieces pulled me out of the story.

move to Outtatowner with Emily and meet all the quirky townies who thrive labelling everyone with nicknames and thrive on the generational feud between the Sullivans and Kings. Pick your favorite set of siblings.

this is a meet cute, chance encounter, one night stand. when Emily notices Whip works for her dad, she awkwardly flees after the best night of her life. after she magically manages to not run into in the smalltown, they are like magnets pushing and pulling trying to fight the feelings. how long until they burn?

as for the narration, I am just no fan when its two narrators but each chapter is read by one or the other only and try to impersonate the other voices. in this book specifically I occassionally struggled when the female narrator did mal impersonation as it was too raspy/whispery and I needed to rewind a few times and crank up the volume

Welcome to Outtatowner and its townies
