The dialogues are sub par in my opinion. At times even irritating because of the ways they go on and deal with all sorts of intense emotions. The book has a few bright spots and a few good monologues but overall I would rather people read The Return of the Native that this one. Not Hardy's best to be sure. Jude and Sue very unrelatable characters. By the end Arrabella seems more realistic than those two. Anyway. That is my 2c.

This is a well written story in typical Thomas Hardy style. Jude goes from one misery to the next. For me it was far too sad and gloomy, nothing for the long winter evenings. Neville Jason is a master teller, the best voice I know.
