A student in a Detroit classroom watches his economics teacher sweat through a lecture on guns and butter—what a nation arms, what it feeds its people—and doesn't yet know he's just been handed the theory of his whole life.

guns + butter follows one chef's decade-long pilgrimage from a Detroit attic to Manhattan's three-Michelin-star kitchens, from a protest pop-up to Mumbai's underground kitchens, chasing a question he doesn't know he's asking, what does it mean to think like a chef?

Structured as ten blessings—a contemporary Beatitudes—the book moves through pain, discipline, forgiveness, loyalty, mercy, faith, and grace like a tasting menu, each course building on the last. After his aunt survives domestic violence and he survives a highway collision, the narrator is called to cooking—not a career but a vocation—summoned by a chef at an all-night Coney Island diner who may not be of this world. Fourteen years follow in the country's toughest kitchens, knives sharpened as discipline, a shattered plate that teaches forgiveness, and a mentor's four words—sharp knife, very good—carrying everything he's worked toward.

The deeper he goes into his craft, the more the book's real subject surfaces, a food-soaked cosmology where guns and butter are never just economics, and coffee is never just coffee. A trip to Mumbai and an encounter with a woman known only as Mum—who may be running an underground network of restaurants—unveil a new understanding of God. What's left lands him, on a rain-soaked night in a Detroit party store, on a Harlem stoop, coffee in hand, home in every sense the word has held.

Kitchen memoir, spiritual reckoning, love letter to the cities that raised him—Guns + Butter: Pop-Up Pilgrimage asks what every great meal secretly asks: what are you willing to give up, who are you willing to become, to be truly free.
